Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor
What you'd do
This position is Maintenance Supervisor of the Mechanical Unit of Engineering Services and is responsible for the operation, maintenance and repair of the complete plumbing/pipefitting/air conditioning and refrigeration systems of this Medical Center.
Major duties
Duties Major duties include but are not limited to; Responsible for the planning, scheduling, and distribution of work assignments to journeymen mechanics in the Mechanical Unit (Plumbing, pipefitting/A/C and Refrigeration shops). Establish policies and procedures in relationship to maintenance operations. Establishing priority according to the availability of manpower, materials, equipment and the nature of the situation. Planning of work orders daily, in house projects weekly, reviewing designs and project inspections monthly Assists in planning of budgets and construction projects Effectively manage an annual budget of approximately $1,000,000. Prepares and submits to his/her supervisor monthly progress reports for the unit Plans and literature pertaining to installation, materials and/or equipment that is part of projects Utilizes background of skills and knowledge in mechanical trades to develop work standards and procedures. Visits the job locations daily to make certain that all work and safety regulations meet the standards set forth by the Government and the Medical Center Keeps a daily record of the location of work, number of employees and trades, number of hours worked, type of work being accomplished and comments concerning any deviations from the specifications or contract Responsible to coordinate his/her work with all Care/Service Line areas of the Medical Center and outside service companies. Schedule repairs and downtime appropriately to minimize Medical Center operation disruption. Responsibilities of this position are 24 hours a day, seven days a week. He/she is expected to work irregular hours and respond to emergency calls at any hour, day or night. Coordinates work with utility companies (sewer and water), plans for emergency shutdowns when the services are at a minimum. Assess and schedule training needs for all maintenance staff. Spot check and inspect maintenance and repair work to ensure quality. Ensures the Preventive Maintenance program is coordinated and completed on schedule. Ensures compliance with numerous hospital accreditation requirements. Ensures staff understand the proper and economical use of tools, equipment, and materials. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: Employee must frequently work in hot, humid, confined spaces around equipment and systems associated with the utility plant. They must climb ladders, bend, crouch, stoop and endure prolonged periods of standing and walking. Employee must lift parts and supplies weighing up to 40 lbs. Perform internal inspections as required by Department of Veterans Affairs. Must be physically fit as work involves lifting, pulling, climbing, crawling, working with hands over head, working in confined areas and using arm and back muscles in tightening of connections. Must possess ability to be on feet for extended periods either standing, walking, working off ladder or staging materials, and lifting equipment weighing 60 lbs. and over. Request assistance when needed to avoid injury. Working Conditions: Must work in areas of elevated temperature, cold temperature, constant noise, chemical fumes, dirt, soot, rotating equipment, oil greases and hot steam piping. Employee generally works outdoors, but works inside occasionally for short periods of time and is exposed to outside weather conditions. Work is performed inside and outside sometimes in severe weather, wet, cramped locations; is frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises, toxic fumes, gases and acids. Subject to burns from steam lines, gas burning equipment, welding torches and molten solder.
