Our work inspires a nation. We are the artisans, historians, and craftspeople who preserve and maintain the landmark buildings, monuments, art and grounds of the Capitol campus. This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol, Library Buildings & Grounds, Tenant Services Division, Projects Branch, Painting Night Section. The Painter-Decorator Assistant Supervisor will perform Painter-Decorator and Decorative-Plasterer duties in an extraordinary artistic and historical environment.

Major duties

Tour of Duty: Sunday evening to Thursday morning, 6:00 pm through 4:30 am. You will foster a culture of learning, sharing, cooperation, and teamwork that improves efficiency and effectiveness throughout the organization. As the Assistant Supervisor, duties include, but are not limited to: Plan the use of workers, equipment, facilities, materials, and tools on a day-to-day or project-by-project basis. Track and report progress on work assignments and requests authority to adjust worker assignment and to use overtime, equipment, and materials to meet schedules. Recommend changes to schedules, priorities, and work sequences as necessary to overcome problems such as equipment failure, material delays, or unplanned absences. Assign work to individuals and provide technical direction. Observe work in progress and inspect completed work for quality and work order requirements; reporting possible or actual work delays to the supervisor. Manage the unit's budget and workload. Provide for employee skills enrichment through job-related coaching, mentoring, and training. Perform decorative plastering on additions, renovations, patching, and new construction. Perform maintenance and repair on unique and historically significant plaster walls, ceilings, cornices and moldings, taking care to avoid damaging architectural features. Perform decorative and protective finishing work on walls, doors, windows, trim, floors, and other building surfaces to shield them from damage, uphold their condition, garnish their appearance, and refurbish worn or deteriorated finishes.

What you need to qualify

You must meet all eligibility and qualification requirements by the closing date of the job announcement. You must meet the following SCREEN-OUT(S) required for this position. Ability to lead or supervise employees in the performance of painting-decorative plaster work including: Estimating materials, labor, and project requirements; Planning use of workers, equipment, facilities, and materials on a regular basis; Providing direction and guidance to employees on proper decorative painting and decorative plaster techniques, including: specialty finishes, ornamental plaster, moldings, cornices, and proper use of materials and troweling/finishing methods.
