What you'd do

This position is assigned to the Maintenance and Operations Shop in the Engineering Service Line and is responsible for and provides the electrical installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical wiring systems and associated fixtures, controls and equipment in support of the facility. The position is critical for the mission of the Engineering function to the hospital.

Major duties

Duties include, but are not limited to: Performs journeyman level work involving responding to a wide variety of emergency repairs at the facilities medical center and all Community-Based Outpatient Clinic locations. Installs, repairs, modifies and maintains electrical systems and equipment. Lays out work, determines requirements, draws materials, and carries assignment to completion utilizing established trade techniques and adhering to safety requirements and national and local electric codes. Installs complete electrical systems as required for domestic, industrial, research, hospital and technical equipment, or remodeling of existing systems. Follows blueprints and circuit diagrams, installs, connects and tests circuit components which includes installing conduits and wiring; connecting outlet boxes and panels, switches, sockets and fixtures; installing circuit breakers. fuses, plugs, and insulating wiring. Tests entire systems for proper operation, utilizing electrical test equipment such as test lamps, ammeters, voltage meters, ohmmeters, megger, recording meters and phase rotation meters. Installs, repairs, maintains, and calibrates a wide variety of electrical equipment. Installs and repairs special lighting and power systems. Tests equipment and diagnoses trouble utilizing available circuit diagrams, or if not available, traces circuits, repairs or replaces defective components. Submits recommendations for modifications to existing equipment to improve overall operation. Service breakers; set thermodynamic trip set points, replace component items for circuit breakers up to 3000 Amp capacity. Test, repair, and maintain essential emergency power switch gear. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm, subject to change based on the needs of the facility Position Description Title/PD#: Electrician/PD06251A Physical Requirements: Required to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up tools, equipment, and parts that weigh up to 50 pounds. Occasionally, may lift and carry items that weigh over 50 pounds. Work Environment: Works inside and outside in all types of weather. Works in confined areas. Occasionally enters underground manholes, steam tunnels (temperatures of 160 degrees and above), and other passageways where subject to danger of electrocution from high voltages, burns from steam distribution lines, cuts, bruises and burns from electrical tools and power equipment. Must work in contaminated and infectious wards and laboratories, experimental and research areas and will be required to receive necessary immunization shots as determined by medical authorities, to reduce health risk. Required to work live circuits with voltage 120, 208, 277, 480, 4160 and 13200 volts as per VHA Directive 2006-056, "Electrical Power Distribution System," that cannot be disconnected serving critical areas. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
