About the Position: This position is located with Director of Surgery, Ophthalmology Department at Naval Medical Center San Diego. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation

Major duties

Transport patients from hospital units to the Operating Room assuring safe transportation of the patient. Screen patient prior to transport to ensure per-operative medications have been given, jewelry, dentures and any prosthetic devices have been removed. Position or assist positioning patient and draping the patient for the specific procedure. Secures patient as required. Follow pre-operative nursing care plan in preparing patient and Operating Room. Scrub technician, select, assemble, and organize required supplies, equipment, and instruments for specific surgical procedure in accordance with operative work sheets, physician preference cards and/or conferring with physicians or charge nurse. Hand instruments to the surgeon during the procedure by anticipating the surgeon's needs. Maintain alertness for complications developing during surgery such as hemorrhage, shock and cardiac arrest and immediately supplies instruments, drugs, and supplies to correct the condition. As a circulator, obtains sterile supplies, sutures, dressings, linens, etc., for the specific procedure. Assist anesthetist during induction and throughout surgical procedure. Obtain supplies needed during surgery such as blood, drugs, solutions, instruments, and additional sterile supplies. Prepare specimens for laboratory; properly labels specimens; takes specimens to the laboratory; records designated data on patient log, documents appropriate information in intraoperative nursing record. Clean operating room after surgery, removes and disposes of soiled and/or contaminated materials; changes linen; washes, disassembles, sterilizes, and reassembles instruments.

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which which includes assembling surgical equipment and instruments in the operating room; preparing equipment and supplies for patients undergoing surgical procedures; sterilizing instruments for the surgical room; and maintaining a sterile operating room for surgery. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). OR Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as surgery. OR Combination of Education and Experience: Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.
