What you'd do
The Smithsonian Institution is the world's largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is located in Office of Protection Services (OPS), Under Secretary for Finance and Administration, Smithsonian Institution (SI). OPS is responsible for overseeing large museum/complex law enforcement and security program and leading and providing protection thorughout SI.
Major duties
The Security Assistant is responsible for supporting the issuance, management, and control of identification badges and access credentials. This position also serves as the key point of contact for staff and visitors requiring identification and access services. In this position, you will: GS-05 Perform ID Office functions in accordance with ID Management and Physical Security Program policies and directives. Receive and ensure required credentialing forms are properly completed. Review forms to identify errors or omissions, return them as needed and follow up to obtain missing or incomplete information. Greet and assist visitors and staff at the ID Office service counter, answer inquiries, and provide general access guidance. Assist in the daily operation of the ID Office, including inventory control of blank badges and accessories, ordering supplies, and maintianing records of distributed materials. GS-06 Perform ID Office functions in accordance with ID Management and Physical Security Program policies and directives. Receive and ensure required credentialing forms are properly completed. Review forms to identify errors or omissions, return them as needed and follow up to obtain missing or incomplete information. Greet and assist visitors and staff at the ID Office service counter, answer inquiries, and provide general access guidance. Review, evaluate, and make adjudicative determinations according to suitability and credentialing standards for preemployment background checks. Provide clerical support to the ID Office Supervisor, including drafting correspondence, maintaining files, and assisting in the preparation of reports or briefings related to ID operations.
What you need to qualify
Experience: GS-05: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 level in the Federal Service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as demonstrated experience: Assisting in reviewing credential request forms for completeness and accuracy to support credential issuance and system access; Providing customer service to applicants and staff regarding personnel security procedures and credentialing requirements; and Monitoring and managing the ID Office security mailbox, help line, and other resource accounts, responding to inquiries and resolving issues efficiently. GS-06: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 level in the Federal Service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as demonstrated experience: Assisting in reviewing credential request forms for completeness and accuracy to support credential issuance and system access; Providing customer service to applicants and staff regarding personnel security procedures and credentialing requirements; Monitoring and managing the ID Office security mailbox, help line, and other resource accounts, responding to inquiries and resolving issues efficiently; and Conducting preliminary case reviews to identify minor suitability concerns and appropriately referring cases to senior staff for further adjudication.
