What you'd do

This position is located at the VA Oklahoma City Health Care System in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and serves under the supervision of the Construction Foreman and Construction Supervisor of Engineering Service. The supervisor assigns work of various scopes depending on the magnitude and urgency of the job's completion.

Major duties

Major duties and responsibilities include: Reads and comprehends blueprints and sketches. Interprets building plans. Reads and interprets technical manuals. Properly braces and supports to control movement and vibration. Troubleshoots, traces and eliminates unusually difficult problems. Troubleshoots for repairs of various piping systems and equipment. Accurate measurement and calculation are essential for cutting, threading, and bending pipes. Accurate in determining angles, tolerances, and proper pipe alignment to ensure leak-free, safe installation. Ability to validate and compare actual vs. design dimensions. Proficient at following strict protocols when working with flammable, toxic or high pressure media. Performs pipefitting/plumbing trade methods and techniques. Proficient at brazing joints. Installs and modifies piping and fitting for plumbing water systems, sewage waste chemical systems, medical gas and vacuum systems, fire sprinkler systems and conditioned air systems. Installs pressure relief valves, checks valves, pressure regulators, expansion joints, steam traps, and other pressure supporting and controlling devices. Plans, sets up, installs, and performs complex modifications to low and high-pressure piping. Uses a wide variety of tools to install, repair and maintain piping systems. Uses and maintains tools for soldering and brazing pipe. Uses tools such as dividers, chalk lines, plumbing tools, templates, core drillers, grinders, hand and power pipe threading machines. Work Schedule: Full-Time, Monday - Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM Position Description Title/PD#: Pipefitter/PD12036A Physical Requirements: The work requires frequently handling heavy materials and parts weighing in excess of 45 pounds. The work also requires pulling, pushing, reaching, walking, standing, crawling, kneeling, bending, and climbing for sustained periods of time. Physical effort is often strenuous and is typical of industrial construction trades. Working Conditions Requirements: Work is performed inside and outside (heat, cold, under and outside of building). Installations, inspections and repairs are made under dirty, noisy, and odorous producing conditions. He/she is frequently exposed to the danger of strains, cuts, bruises, and burns.

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR (SCREEN-OUT) - FOUR Selective Placement Factors (SPF) have been identified for this position. Selective Placement Factors (SPF) are a prerequisite to appointment and represent minimum requirements for the position. Applicants who do not meet the SPF are ineligible for further consideration. Plumbing contractor or journeyman license from a state agency. Medical gas installer's license and brazing certification from an accredited program. 8 hours of documented asbestos abatement training. 3 years of pipefitting/plumbing experience in a hospital environment. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair Interpret Instructions, Specifications (includes blueprint reading) Measurement and Layout Technical Practices Troubleshooting Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Without more than normal supervision Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
