What you'd do

For all assignments above the full performance level, thehigher-level duties must consist of signifi cant scope and administrative independence.

Major duties

Duties: The incumbent maintains the overall cleanliness and readiness of patient care areas, performing routine cleaning and basic maintenance of clinical equipment. They are responsible for ordering, stocking, and monitoring pharmaceuticals and medical supplies to ensure adequate inventories that support ongoing clinical operations. The position requires a strong working knowledge of the DHCP mainframe system and related PC applications used in patient care and daily clinic workflows. With this knowledge, the employee is able to recognize the urgency of clinical needs, respond appropriately to both routine and unique situations, and support the continuous flow of patient care activities. Work is performed with a high level of independence and minimal direct supervision. While the Coordinator of the Ambulatory Surgery Program provides overall direction, the incumbent exercises significant initiative and sound judgment to manage daily duties and resolve non-recurring issues. They consistently demonstrate the ability to initiate necessary actions and maintain clinic operations without constant oversight. The employee follows a variety of written and verbal guidelines, including medical records, physician instructions, clinical policies, VHA/VAMC regulations, directives, and reference materials. They proactively consult appropriate information sources as needed to ensure accurate and compliant task completion. Duties span a broad range of clinical and administrative functions that require independent judgment, technical knowledge, and the ability to manage multiple demands simultaneously. The incumbent supports special projects when assigned and adapts to the dynamic needs of the perioperative environment. The overall purpose of the position is to ensure the proper processing, preparation, and coordination of surgical patients, while contributing to the effective functioning of the clinic. By maintaining operational flow and supporting direct patient care areas, the employee plays a vital role in safeguarding the welfare of patients. What you need to qualify

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 07/17/2026. Individual Occupational Requirements Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. OR Education and Training For GS-3: Successful completion of l year of study that included study in medical, health, or related fields. For GS-4: Successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in subjects related to the position. For GS-5: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS 06 position, for a GS 05, you must have served 52 weeks at the grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate that you possess one year of time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one year of time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. Preferred Experience: Previous ED or Perioperative Service Experience. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: . OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level, you must have: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position, OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have a combination of specialized experience and education beyond.
