What you'd do

The Environmental Services Technician Supervisor is located in the Environmental Management Services service line of the Phoenix VA Health Care System (PVAHCS). The primary purpose of the position is to serve as supervisor for one or more Environmental Health Teams comprised of Housekeeping Aids. Supervisor ensures that the facility will be maintained in a state of physical and biological cleanliness and appearance.

Major duties

Duties of the position include but are not limited to: Supervises and directs Housekeeping Aids in maintaining a clean, safe, and sanitary environment throughout the medical center, including inpatient wards, operating rooms, isolation rooms, and emergency areas. Implements and monitors infection control and environmental sanitation programs in compliance with VA and CDC standards. Plans, organizes, and assigns daily and weekly work schedules, setting priorities and ensuring timely completion of tasks. Conducts regular inspections of work areas to ensure compliance with cleanliness, safety, and quality standards. Provides technical guidance and training to staff on cleaning procedures, disinfecting techniques, and proper use of equipment and chemicals. Oversees handling and disposal of infectious waste and ensures adherence to safety protocols and OSHA requirements. Manages floor care operations, including stripping, waxing, and maintenance of mounted and unmounted equipment. Maintains accurate records for accountability, quality assurance, and reporting purposes. Evaluates employee performance, approves leave, and addresses disciplinary issues in accordance with union agreements and VA policies. Interviews and recommends candidates for selection, promotion, or reassignment; supports employee development and training initiatives. Ensures compliance with safety directives, including use of PPE and adherence to Material Safety Data Sheets (SDS). Responds to emergency cleaning situations and provides support to other hospital services as needed. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Ability to Lead or Supervise Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
