What you'd do

About the Position: Work is performed in a hospital-based ambulatory neurology specialty clinic and outpatient clinic where exposure to contagious and infectious disease are possible. You may be required to occasionally transport patients or medical supplies. This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

Major duties

Prepares patients and rooms for patient care activities, examinations, and diagnostic tests. Takes accurate vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, respirations, temperature, height and weight) and other required measurements (intake and output; pulse oximeter readings). Accompanies patients in wheelchairs, on litters, or ambulatory within the hospital or as attendant to other facilities for tests or transfer. Recognizes and responds to emergency situations according to prescribed emergency measures. Provides patient care as assigned to include documentation of nursing activities in patients' records as appropriate. Completes lab work and other Point of Care testing within scope of practice through certifications, standing protocols, and competency verification. Screens immunization records IAW AR 40-562 and unit Standard Operating Procedures to select required immunizations, correct dosages, and routs of administration. Administers oral, intradermal, subcutaneous, intramuscular immunizations. Schedules appointments with the appropriate clinic and health care provider dependent on patient disposition, complaint or symptoms or services requested. Performs a variety of support and clerical duties as needed. Assists/chaperones patient care providers during examinations, procedures, treatments and diagnostic tests. Initiates Basic Life Support on infants, children, and adults.

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes assisting with reception and/or clerical duties in a Medical Treatment Facility; assisting with maintaining and/or updating medical records; and assisting with tests, screenings, and/or examinations such as blood pressure, temperature, pulse, immunizations; applying and removing bandages. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04). OR Education: Four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.
