Medical Instrument Tech (Diagnostic Ultrasound)
What you'd do
This position is within the Coatesville VA Medical Center, providing treatment of medical, surgical, and psychiatric patients, both inpatient and outpatient services. The work requires a high degree of judgment in responding to both employee and patient concerns and providing solutions to process problems as they affect day-to-day operations.
Major duties
The incumbent works closely with the Sonographer, Radiology Supervisor, radiologist, clinicians, technologists, and clerical staff to assure optimum quality control, high quality diagnostic/therapeutic exam results, and patient satisfaction. This specialty modality uses high frequency sound waves and other diagnostic techniques for medical purposes. The technologist must be competent in the production, use, recognition, and analysis of ultrasound images and patterns used for patient diagnosis and treatment. The sonographer is regarded as the expert source and the interpreting radiologist relies heavily on the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the sonographers in providing a final interpretation. The technologist requires knowledge of image acquisition in ultrasound and Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS) and can carry out his/her assignment independently. Performs, in a hospital setting all ultrasound examinations ranging from the routine to the highly specialized. Performs Liver Elastography exams utilizing the elastography software. Assists radiologist with all steroid injections that need to be performed under ultrasonic guidance (fingers, hands, shoulders) which includes knowledge of sterile technique. Experience imaging structures while simultaneously obtaining Doppler signal, M-mode and recording images and Doppler shift recordings along with patient information for interpretation by a radiologist. Receives and identifies patients using two (2) patient identifiers, explains methods of procedures, assists movement of patients to and from wheelchair, table, positions the patient and performs examinations as requested. Controls technical factors on ultrasound unit, which will affect time, gain, amplitude, velocity, frequency, attenuation, absorption, reflection, scattering, refraction, and diffraction. Selects between non-focused, fixed-focus, linear phased array, an annular phased array. Assists Lead Ultrasound Technologist in establishing protocols for routine examinations and makes independent judgments when it is necessary to deviate from standard procedures. Advises radiologist of significant abnormalities that would require their immediate attention and visualization while the patient is undergoing exam. What you need to qualify
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: GS-9, Medical Instrument Technician (Diagnostic Ultrasound) Experience: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level, which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. This would be specialized experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge required in order to provide all aspects of diagnostic ultrasonography services. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: Knowledge of the more complex examination and treatment procedures and techniques in order to provide training and supervision in these procedures, to evaluate and initiate performance improvement projects, and to write policies, procedures, and protocols that pertain to diagnostic ultrasonography. Knowledge of JCAHO and other regulatory requirements. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels. Certification. Registration by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) or by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) is highly desirable. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are also desirable. Preferred Experience: Certification in General Sonography (ARDMS AB) and Vascular imaging (RVT) is desired. Experience with a GE Logiq E10 is preferred.
