What you'd do

This position serves as a Cartographic Technician for the Branch of Lands and Realty within the Alaska BLM State Office. One position is located in Anchorage, Alaska. We expect to one vacancy at this time; however, additional positions may be filled from this announcement if they become available.

Major duties

Some of the major duties you will perform include but are not limited to the following: Assists in researching to locate and obtain information from existing databases. Monitors submittals for quality control of Public Land Records to ensure accuracy. Manages records notation requests to determine suitability for notation to the BLM's Public Land Record System. Assists with technical support and troubleshooting the field mapping projects utilizing Global Positioning Systems and digital imagery for accurate map content and symbolization. Creates database queries and maps products in different digital file formats. Assesses BLM Alaska's needs and updates information in the master title plats (MTP), historical plats (HI), controlled document index (CDI) records, and survey plats and notes. Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.

What you need to qualify

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-07/21/2026-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. All candidates must also meet Time-in-Grade requirements. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. Failure to adequately provide information needed to determine number of hours worked in each position may result in that time not being credited when evaluating qualifying experience. For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected. To qualify at the GS-07 level you must meet the following: Specialized Experience Requirement: You must possess at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-6 level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is defined as demonstrated experience: Utilizing Microsoft databases and Computer Aided Drafting software; Assisting with the development of GIS databases and maps, including data collection, editing, and interpretation; Providing guidance and technical assistance in the above at an introductory level to colleagues or volunteers. OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have one (1) full year (18 semester hours) of graduate-level education in a related field of study. OR Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the difficulty and complexity to do the work of this position. To qualify at the GS-08 level you must meet the following: Specialized Experience Requirement: You must possess at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is defined as demonstrated experience: Developing and maintaining files, digital data layers and generate map products; Reviewing source material for accuracy and correcting errors; Processing data using computer-assisted systems; Assisting staffing specialist in creating, editing, and correcting digital data or map information. OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have a Master's or equivalent degree in Cartography or related degree fields, or two (2) full years (36 semester hours) of graduate-level education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree in a related field of study. OR Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the difficulty and complexity to do the work of this position. Only graduate level education in excess of 18 semester hours may be combined with experience. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
