About the Position: This position is located within David Grant Medical Center, 60th MDG, Travis AFB, CA. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation A recruitment or relocation incentive may be authorized. Salary negotiation may be available for those candidates who are new to Federal service. Non-Federal work experience may be creditable for leave purposes.

Major duties

Plan all aspects of the hospital radiation safety program through application of professional knowledge and skill in health physics, practices, and techniques. Apply health physics theory and practices to maintain radiation exposures As Low As Reasonably Achievable and assure compliance with applicable AF, DHA, Federal, local laws, regulations, or other guidance. Serve as the focal point for assigned contracted projects. Responsible for communicating and coordinating assigned program issues with superiors, team members, higher headquarters, regulatory agencies, other installation units, community, and other officials and/or interest groups. Prepare proposed responses to congressional inquiries, audit reports, inspection reports, press releases, and public concerns. Comply with health, safety, and environmental rules and procedures and performs work that enhances the safety and security of the work environment. Ensure adherence to Federal, state, and local codes concerning health, safety, and the environment.

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Basic Requirement for Health Physicist: A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus. OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or other education. OR C. Certification: Certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in paragraph A. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) applying health physics theory and practices to maintain radiation exposures as low as reasonably achievable, 2) assisting in comprehensive radiation protection programs, and 3) assisting higher graded staff in performing management of safe, cost-effective, and compliant disposal of radioactive waste generated by customers. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11) Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
