VA San Diego Healthcare System seeks a Supervisory Medical Instrument Technician (Cardiac Catheterization) for the Cardiology Section. The role oversees technicians and works with interventionalists, electrophysiologists, nurses, clinicians, and clerical staff to ensure high-quality care, efficient coordination, accurate diagnostic and therapeutic results, and strong patient satisfaction.

Major duties

The Supervisory Medical Instrument Technician (Cardiology Manager) oversees daily operations, staffing, training, and quality assurance across multiple cardiology diagnostic and procedural laboratories within the Medicine Service. The role supervises MITs in the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, Electrophysiology Laboratory, Cardiac Ultrasound Laboratory, Exercise Treadmill Testing Laboratory, Heart Station and Holter Laboratory, and, where applicable, ICU Blood Gas Laboratory. Major duties include, but are not limited to the following: Directs, assigns, and evaluates daily work of MITs across all cardiology laboratories. Conducts annual and biannual performance evaluations and competency assessments. Initiates corrective or disciplinary actions when necessary and ensures adherence to policies and procedures. Manages recruitment, placement, promotion, and reassignment activities. Oversees timekeeping, leave approval, call schedules, and emergency coverage assignments. Develops training objectives and curriculum for MIT staff across multiple subspecialties. Provides classroom and hands-on training on cardiovascular procedures and equipment. Authors standard operating procedures, training documents, and competency tools. Performs ongoing assessment of staff capability and provides targeted feedback. Establishes local quality criteria and ensures alignment with accreditation agency standards. Monitors data accuracy, documentation completeness, and adherence to the quality assurance plan. Oversees quality control programs in all laboratories, including equipment/instrument validation and staff competency documentation. Ensures all staff maintain required certifications (e.g., BLS, ACLS, moderate sedation, fluoroscopy, specialty credentials). Identifies deficiencies and implements corrective action plans; collaborates with leadership to justify or dispute equipment or data issues. Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases. What you need to qualify

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Licensure or Certification: Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of essential knowledge, skills, and abilities. For certain functional areas at higher levels or supervisory assignments, specific certifications appropriate to the specialty are indicated in this standard under "Titles and Certification/Registrations". For all specialties identified in this standard, Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certifications are desirable. Training which does not result in official certification does not meet this definition. English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d). Education/Training: To be creditable education, must have been gained in an accredited Community College, College, or University. Training: Completion of appropriate training such as in-service training programs, on the job training, training acquired while in the Armed Forces, government sponsored developmental training programs, and/or training under physicians certified in the functional area will be allowed on a month-for month basis through the GS-5 level. Foreign Education: To be creditable, education completed outside the U.S. must have been submitted to a private organization that specializes in the interpretation of foreign educational credentials and such education must have been deemed at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. programs. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determination: In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the criteria discussed in the applicable headings, or that defined in the appendices, must be met when determining the grade of candidates. GS-10, Supervisory Medical Instrument Technician (Cardiac Catheterization) Experience: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level (GS-9), which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. This would be experience that demonstrates possession of the knowledge required to provide the most complex cardiac catheterization technician services and/or supervisory knowledge, skills, and abilities. AND Knowledge Skills and Abilities: In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: Advanced knowledge of complex and non-standard treatment and examination procedures and techniques. Ability to plan, develop, and assist in the establishment of a fully integrated treatment and examination program. Ability to evaluate new products, technology, and equipment, and to make informed recommendations that will improve laboratory operations. Ability to manage fiscal responsibilities for the functions supervised, including fund control, contracts, equipment procurement, forecasting resource needs, and administering the allocated budget. Knowledge of, and ability to carry out, the full range of supervisory duties, including workload assignment, performance evaluation, staff selection, and recommendations for awards, advancements, and disciplinary actions when appropriate. AND Certification: Registration by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) as a registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) is highly desirable. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are also desirable for employees at this level. Duties require extensive periods of standing and walking. Working with patients requires regular and recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching and similar unrestricted activities that require use of effective body mechanics. Special safety precautions are used to reduce exposure to radiation in the Cardiac Cath Lab (CCL). Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. While performing duties of this job, the CCL Technician is frequently required to stand, walk, bend and reach. Must be able to lift and/or move over 35 pounds. They must have good manual dexterity and keyboarding skills. Must be able to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word. Must be able to view and read information on computer screens.
