Major duties
Manage the Chemical Safety Program to guarantee safe operations across all laboratory environments. Develop laboratory-specific safety policies and hazard risk assessments by collaborating with management and technical staff. Execute standard SOH (Safety and Occupational Health) functions to mitigate injury/illness. Investigate workplace mishaps to implement systemic corrective actions. Administer safety training, coordinate health screenings, coordinate external agency audits, and review procurement requests and contracts as needed for compliance with safety standards. Coordinate emergency management plans with the primary agency representative to align organizational safety readiness.

Basic Requirements for Safety and Occupational Health Specialist GS-0018-11: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes assisting with safety mishap investigations to identify causes, analyzing hazards to prevent workplace injuries, assessing chemical safety procedures during workplace inspections, and drafting safety operating procedures based on established guidelines. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). OR Education:Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Safety/Management, Chemistry or related Physical Sciences, Industrial Hygiene, or Emergency Planning and Response. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages. Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-09). Basic Requirements for Safety and Occupational Health Specialist GS-0018-12: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes managing a chemical safety program to ensure regulatory compliance, investigating safety mishaps to implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence, evaluating emergency readiness exercises to identify safety deficiencies and developing safety management system policies and/or procedures to support business operations. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-11).
