This vacancy is for a GS-0986-7, Legal Assistant located in the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Coast Guard, PPC LEGAL SERVICES STAFF in TOPEKA, Kansas.

Major duties

You will serve as a Legal Assistant and be responsible for reviewing all incoming legal actions such as garnishment orders, bankruptcy claims, affidavits, powers of attorney, certificates of true copy, applications, notices, qualified domestic relations orders, summonses, subpoenas, and other legal documents to ensure compliance with federal statutory and regulatory requirements and refer documents to the paralegals and attorney and other PPC offices as necessary and locating and compile information from files, determining if any treatment, such as rearrangement or simple computations is necessary, and route the assembled documents to a paralegal for technical review if necessary. Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include: Analyzes legislation and Coast Guard and Department of Defense regulations related to military personnel and pay administration. Receive office incoming phone calls and answer customer questions or forward the caller to the appropriate office for response. Locate, compile, and/or prepare office case files, to include updating the office database tracking system (Law Manager) as necessary, for routing to a paralegal or the attorney. Administer the office database tracking system (Law Manager), establishing, maintaining, and closing out case files, annotating status records, and compiling workload and status reports, and retirement reports. Prepare office case files, routine correspondence, reports, and presentations in accordance with Legal Office processes. Provide administrative support to the attorney in response to subpoenas, garnishment requests and other legal actions requiring attorney review and response. Maintain supervisory attorney and Legal Office calendars, coordinate schedules as required with PPC senior staff, reminding the attorney and paralegals of appointments and deadlines. What you need to qualify

To qualify at the GS-7 grade level, your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-6 grade level in the federal sector. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work. Examples of specialized experience include performing the following types of tasks on a regular basis. Progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled.
