SAFETY AND OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH SPECIALIST
What you'd do
Defense Finance and Accounting Services (DFAS) mission is to lead the DoD in finance and accounting by ensuring the delivery of efficient, exceptional quality pay and financial information. Telework availability is limited and will only be provided on a rare case-by-case basis during situations where Agency Leadership has determined that telework serves a compelling DoD need.
Major duties
Conducts routine inspections and investigative work in enforcing occupational safety and health laws. Conducts training in accident prevention, safety work methods, and hazard identification. Provides recommendations for abatement of unsafe work habits and/or conditions in compliance with safety standards, regulations, policies, procedures, and operating instructions. Monitors work-order submission, progress, and completion for assigned areas and ensures that abatement plans are prepared when necessary. Investigates incidents/accidents to initiate ways to prevent or reduce such accidents and to recommend corrective measures.
What you need to qualify
For GS-07 grade level: One year of specialized experience equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to that of the next lower grade (GS-06) within the federal service, which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position, is required. Specialized experience at the GS-07 grade level is defined as: Assisting in the planning, organizing, and evaluation of safety and occupational health programs; implementing local safety and occupational health policies; investigating and documenting accidents and mishaps. For GS-09 grade level: One year of specialized experience equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to that of the next lower grade (GS-07) within the federal service, which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position, is required. Specialized Experience at the GS-09 grade level is defined as: Applying recognized safety, environmental, and health principles, standards, laws and techniques to assist in the management and evaluation of a safety or occupational health program or program element; provide technical advice and guidance to management and employees on occupational safety and health requirements; assist in the development of standards, regulations, practices and procedures to eliminate or control potential hazards. Paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience.
