This position is located in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Southeast Network (VISN 7), VA Augusta Health Care System (VAAHCS) in Augusta, Georgia located in Specialty Care. The Advanced Medical Support Assistant (AMSA) position is an administrative foundational role for any outpatient area throughout the facility. To include but not limited to Call Center, Primary Care, Operator Suite, Medicine, Surgery, Mental Health, Radiology, Audiology, Dental, Spinal Cord, and Rehabilitation.

Major duties

Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional The purpose of the position is to facilitate health care needs, huddle with team members for directions, and respond to Veterans or family with instructions, appointments, or actions to be taken. The AMSA works collaboratively with other members of an expanded health care team including pharmacist, social workers, dieticians, behavioral health staff, etc. to provide a robust interdisciplinary approach to care. Important interfaces and collaborations also occur with larger health care system providers including VA and non-VA specialists, hospitals, diagnostic and treating facilities, and community-based programs. The incumbent performs a variety of administrative functions but not limited to the following: The AMSA works collaboratively in an interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery model within Outpatient Clinics. The AMSA develops and maintains effective and efficient communication with the patient, interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery model teams, VA medical centers, and or other agencies. The AMSA is responsible for setting priorities and deadlines, adjusting the flow and sequencing of work to meet the team and patient needs; he/she works with the team to reinforce the plan of care and self-help solutions and entering appropriate information into the electronic record; monitoring pre-appointment requirements to assure readiness for patient visit/procedure. The AMSA must possess working knowledge of clinic processes and service to function in and interact with various clinics throughout the hospital. The employee must have knowledge of and the ability to apply policies and procedures associated with operational activities that affect workload data. Support patient safety standards using the correct Veterans Affairs identification of all patients using two forms of identification, name and last four. The patient may also present the Veterans Identification Card (VIC) for identification. The AMSA must use each interaction with the patient to validate and update patient demographic information, either in person during check-in- or over the phone, to decrease the incidence of returned mail due to incorrect addresses and the inability to contact the patient by phone due to incorrect number. The AMSA also assures that all outpatient clinic encounters are reviewed daily for completion and work directly with clinical staff, as needed, to prevent open encounters for more than 24 hours. Work Schedule: 8:00am - 4:30pm, 8:30am -5:00pm or 9:00am - 5:30pm Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade). Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year) Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience. Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child. Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66. Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement) Telework: Not Available Functional Statement #:62256F

What you need to qualify

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: Applicants appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English. Experience: Some experience of clerical, office, customer service, or other administrative work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position; OR Education: High school diploma with desire for some post graduate education. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: Must possess one (1) full year (52 weeks) of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-05). The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is the grade of GS-06. Physical Requirements: The work of the positions is primarily sedentary; however, some walking, standing, bending stooping and carrying of small items such as files may be required.
