Accounting Technician

This position is within the VISN 12 Great Lakes Fiscal Service (GLFS) and located at the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center in Milwaukee, WI. The incumbent serves as an Accounting Technician and is organizationally aligned under the GLFS Accounting Section.
Major duties
Examines vouchers, invoices, claims, and other requests or payment for goods and services provided to the medical center for accuracy, adequacy, compliance, and justification. Examines a full range of vouchers having a wide variety of complicating conditions. Provides general accounting technician assistance to the Great Lakes Fiscal Service (GLFS) Accounting function such as support to the Medical Centers accounts receivable and debt collection function. Reviews and analyzes accounts receivable debts due. Enters new account information into the computer and refers account to the appropriate specialist. Processes accounts receivable, approving repayment plans offered by debtors. Examines, verifies, and maintains financial account and accounting data and classifies accounting transactions including the verification of the accuracy and completeness of the accounting data. Summarizes transactions and prepares control documents or other posting documents reflecting the entries to be made. Reconciles undelivered orders and accrued services payable with the general ledger control accounts on a monthly basis. Reviews documents to ensure their accuracy, that they are authorized in conformity with existing regulations, that they are charged to the proper appropriation, and that sufficient funds are available. What you need to qualify
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 07/21/2026. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: To qualify for this position at the GS-6 level, you must meet the following: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level which provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of an Accounting Technician. Specialized experience includes but is not limited to: Experience working with accounting regulations, operations, and procedures to resolve transactions, discrepancies, or perform other work that requires authoritative procedural knowledge. Experience handling a variety of accounting and budget functional areas to research or investigate problems or errors that require reconciliation. Experience using automated systems to access, retrieve, and generate various transaction data and reports. Experience reviewing documents for missing or incompatible information. Using judgement to select the most appropriate guidelines, procedures, and approaches appropriate for the work being accomplished. Experience making recommendations or taking action based on regulations, documents, or issues. There is no educational substitution at this grade level.
