Supervisory Education Program Specialist (TRIO Director)
What you'd do
This position is part of the Haskell Indian Nations University, Bureau of Indian Education (BIE), Department of the Interior (DOI). As a Supervisory Education Program Specialist (TRIO Director) you will be responsible for developing and implementing programming to promote student persistence and retention, student success and graduation.
Major duties
As a Supervisory Education Program Specialist (TRIO Director), GS-1720-11, your typical work assignments may include the following under supervision: Providing supervision, leadership and mentoring of staff, tutors and student workers in the TRIO-Student Support Services (TRIO-SSS) program. Implementing, managing, and supplementing strategic student support programing related to peer tutoring, summer bridge program, seminar course, first generation students, student employment and other initiatives. Ensuring TRIO-SSS is responding to student issues and concerns; working closely with students to resolve all issues to ensure ongoing satisfaction and successful progress towards graduation. Working collaboratively with all university departments to identify incoming students who need additional support; developing and monitoring academic plans accordingly. Performing instruction duties, depending on need. Assigned to a student caseload to create and manage academic success plans and ensure student progress.
What you need to qualify
Applicants must meet the qualification requirements contained in the OPM Standards. For this position, they are listed below. BASIC REQUIREMENTS: A. Degree: that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours in a field related to the work of the position to be filled, of which at least 9 semester hours must have been in education courses. -or- B. Combination of education and experience -- at least 24 semester hours in a field related to the work of the position to be filled, of which at least 9 semester hours must have been in education courses, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience must reflect the level and kind described in C below. -or- C. Four years of experience that demonstrated a thorough understanding of the principles and practices underlying the work of this series. This experience must have been of such character and diversity to demonstrate that the applicant possesses an understanding of the field comparable to that normally acquired through successful completion of a full 4- year course of study in an accredited college or university. -or- D. At least 1 full academic year of professional teaching experience. This experience is defined as full and primary responsibility, under general supervision, for instruction of assigned students in an accredited school or institution. This includes responsibility for preparing and presenting lessons and for evaluating students' progress, including a determination of the students' success or failure according to established criteria. Serving in an assistant capacity to a professor without the authority to determine the students' success or failure to meet course requirements does not meet this criterion. In addition to meeting the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the following Minimum Qualifications requirements: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. GS-11: Applicant meets the basic education requirement and possess one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped me with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. This experience is related to the work of the position and equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service that includes: Supervising or leading staff that provide academic advising, student support, retention, or educational services; developing, implementing, coordinating, or evaluating student support, retention, academic success, or educational programs designed to improve student persistence, academic achievement, and graduation outcomes; managing or administering an Early Alert System (EAS) or similar student success/case management system to identify at-risk students, coordinate interventions, and monitor student progress; developing academic success plans, identifying barriers to student achievement, coordinating support services, and helping students improve self-efficacy, time management, organization, and study skills; maintaining administrative records, monitoring budgets, preparing performance reports, ensuring compliance with Federal grant requirements and institutional policies. -or- B. I have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree OR 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. -or- C. I have a combination of graduate level education (as defined in B above) and specialized experience (as defined in A above) when combined together meets 100% of the total requirements for the position. When combining education with experience, first determine the applicant's total qualifying education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level; then determine the applicant's experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; finally, add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for that grade level. All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
