What you'd do

The Health Technician, Virtual Safety Monitor (VSM), is located at the Orlando VA Healthcare System, Lake Nona Campus. The incumbent functions as a member of the Nursing team and is responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of patients through advanced virtual monitoring systems. This involves the use of cutting-edge technology to continuously monitor patients and provide timely intervention.

Major duties

Major duties include but are not limited to: Maintains visual observation of all patients on the system, always. Verbally redirects patients over digital 2-way audio device that is in patient room. Immediately alerts nursing staff if the patient requires assistance. Documents all admissions, discharges, adverse events, and routine observations as required and outlined by the Tele sitter program. Provides floor staff with information in a timely fashion when patients appear to pose a threat to themselves or others. Assures patient environment safety and seeks assistance with removal of any potential safety hazard from room and reports findings to appropriate staff members. Escalates issues in a timely manner to staff nurse, unit charge nurse, or nursing manager/supervisor as appropriate. Documents all monitoring activities, patient interactions, and interventions in electronic medical records (EMR) to ensure comprehensive patient care documentation. Participates in report with on-coming monitor staff when arriving for shift, and upon completion of shift. Performs other related duties as assigned. Work Schedule: 7:30AM-4:00PM, 3:30PM-12:00AM, 11:30PM-8:00AM, Rotating weekends and holidays, flexible to meet the needs of the organization. Virtual: This is not a virtual position. What you need to qualify

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 07/17/2026. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-6 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-5. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. Individual Occupational Requirement for Health Aid and Technician (0640) Series (IOR): An IOR is a basic requirement that must be met in order to qualify for entry into this job series, and it is something that can't be waived. Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. Please clearly state your experience in resume. In addition to meeting the Individual Occupational Requirement, applicants must also meet the specialized experience. You may qualify based on your experience as described below: Specialized Experience-Submitted SF-50: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Monitoring patients from a remote location and redirect them when necessary to ensure patient safety; Compiling, recording, reviewing, selecting, and basic interpretation of data collection and information that relate to patient care; Responding to patient needs and changes in patient priority depending on patient presentation and safety intervention; Proficiency in software applications to include electronic healthcare records systems; Regular and recurring contact with patients and the multidisciplinary team for the purpose of providing a range of care and services and/or obtaining facts or information. You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position: Attention to Detail Customer Service Flexibility Integrity/Honesty Interpersonal Skills Reading Comprehension Self-Management Stress Tolerance Teamwork Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Preferred experience: Monitoring patients from a remote location and redirect them when necessary to ensure patient safety; Compiling, recording, reviewing, selecting, and basic interpretation of data collection and information that relate to patient care; Responding to patient needs and changes in patient priority depending on patient presentation and safety intervention; Proficiency in software applications to include electronic healthcare records systems; Regular and recurring contact with patients and the multidisciplinary team for the purpose of providing a range of care and services and/or obtaining facts or information. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: Requires regular recurring, periods of standing and walking. The duties also require occasional bending and lifting, that is 45 pounds or more, reaching, carrying, pushing, stooping, stretching, and similar activities. The incumbent assists in protecting patients' self and other team members from physical harm by hostile and/or confused patients by therapeutically applying physical restraints that may require bending and stretching. The position requires strength and stamina to perform duties, ability to sit at a desk for long periods of time, look at a computer for long periods of time, walk and stand for 4 hours. Must be able to maintain effective audio, visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others, reading, and writing, and operating office equipment. Must be able to use a telephone to communicate verbally and a keyboard to communicate through written means, to review information and enter/retrieve data, to see and read characters on a computer screen.
