Major duties

The Mental Health Service at VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System (GLA) is seeking a full-time Deputy Chief, SUD Subdivision to join our team. As a team member you will provide oversight of various administrative and programmatic resources, as assigned by the Chief, SUD Subdivision, and as such, organizes, directs, administers, and manages assigned aspects of service. The SUD subdivision consists of multiple sections providing complex, comprehensive treatment at multiple GLA sites. Each section includes (but is not limited to) an Opioid Treatment Program (OTP), an Intensive Outpatient Program, an aftercare (abstinence support) program, and general outpatient services including low-threshold approaches and treatment of co-occurring mental health disorders for Veterans with qualifying diagnoses. Responsibilities for this position are complex in size and scope. The organization of services within this subdivision encompasses numerous component parts integral to the appropriate provision of Substance Use Disorder/Opioid Treatment Program services, which has a significant impact overall GLA Mental Health Operations and directly effects the overall access of MH care for veterans across the vast GLA catchment area. Will collaborates with the Chief, SUD Subdivision, in the implementation of Joint Commission standards, and facilitation of Joint Commission readiness for SUD programs including intensive outpatient programs and opioid treatment programs. Participates in many Mental Health & hospital wide committees, including MH Steering Committee, SAIL Committees, CBOC Communities of Practice (to facilitate SUD treatment and promote best practices in CBOCs), Training Committees, and the Overdose Review Committee. Teaching - May participate in supervision of psychiatry residents and may assist in organizing resident training in the SUD program. Address clinic operation needs as it relates to resident training. Patient Care Services - Provide direct patient care services to Veterans in the section and at other sites within GLA. Participate in same day access and other co-located collaborative duties with other staff assigned by the service. Perform direct in-person or virtual assessments and treatment, when indicated. Attend huddles for informal consultation and education of the team. Will bear overall responsibility for the MH treatment of the Veteran. Collaborate with the client/family to establish physical, mental, cultural and environmental factors that facilitate or impede realistic goals and activities. Determine potential needs for therapeutic changes, diagnostic workups or subspecialty consultation. Order and/or interpret appropriate laboratory tests, x-rays, and other relevant diagnostic studies and procedures. Review medications for clinical need, simplification and possible drug-drug interactions and adjust as indicated. Prescribe, administer and review/evaluate Veteran's response to pharmacological and nonpharmacological treatment regimens. Provide education and counseling of the Veteran and the Veteran's family in preventive care, medical conditions and the use of prescribed treatments and drugs. Perform timely safety assessments as necessary and develop a safety plan with the veteran when indicated. What you need to qualify

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA), in the list published for the year the residency, or fellowship if applicable, was completed; OR (2) One year of post medical school training (internship, first year of residency, or transitional year residency) approved by ACGME or AOA followed by two years of post-training independent practice (performing under a full and unrestricted license) in the United States; OR (3) Non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the United States (performing under a full and unrestricted license) performing duties related to the position they are applying for (United States fellowships would be creditable towards this requirement), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the Physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Exceptions: Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. In rare and unusual circumstances, the Facility Director can submit a memo to the VISN Director through the VISN Chief Medical Officer, who may approve requests for reasonable exceptions to the residency training requirement for Physicians whose composite record of experience, accomplishments, performance, and qualifications warrant such action. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Required Experience: Board Certification in Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). Board Certification in Addiction Psychiatry or Addiction Medicine. Preferred Experience: Demonstrated leadership experience in an academic or clinical setting, preferably overseeing programs or fellowships in addiction psychiatry. Strong and sustained research background in addiction psychiatry, evidenced by: Peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals related to addiction, psychiatry, or behavioral health. Successful grant awards as Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator, with a focus on addiction research. Experience supervising, mentoring, and developing trainees, residents, fellows, or junior faculty. Ability to foster collaboration across multidisciplinary teams and advance clinical training programs. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present scientific findings and oversee educational initiatives.
