This vacancy is for a GS - 0963 - 7/8, Merchant Mariner Credentialing Specialist located in the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Coast Guard, REGIONAL EXAM CENTER-HOUSTON in HOUSTON, Texas.

Major duties

You will serve as a Merchant Mariner Credentialing Specialist and be responsible for serving as a specialist in the areas of merchant mariners credentialing and examination of merchant marine personnel with an emphasis on reviewing and evaluating first-class pilot applications and grading first class pilot examinations. Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include: Reviewing and processing applications for Merchant Mariner Credentials (MMC) Evaluating applications for first-class pilotage routes and grades associated examinations, including navigational chart sketches. Identifying non-conformities in applications and documentation that could delay or prevent the issuance of a Coast Guard MMC Responding to oral and written inquiries from the public and other agencies regarding merchant mariner credentialing requirements and application status. Administering, securing, and evaluating Coast Guard examination modules for specific mariner credentials. What you need to qualify

To qualify at the GS-07 grade level, your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 grade level in the federal sector. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work. Examples of specialized experience include performing the following types of tasks on a regular basis. Reviewing applications or supporting documents for completeness or accuracy against established legal or regulatory guidelines; identifying and noting discrepancies; and communicating with applicants or stakeholders to gather required information. Applying rules, policies, or procedures to process applications, claims, or similar requests; Providing oral or written responses to public inquiries about program requirements; and using computer systems to enter or retrieve case information. To qualify at the GS-08 grade level, your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 grade level in the federal sector. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work. Examples of specialized experience include performing the following types of tasks on a regular basis. Reviewing applications or supporting documents for completeness or accuracy against established legal or regulatory guidelines; identifying and noting discrepancies; and communicating with applicants or stakeholders to gather required information. Interpretating and applying rules, policies, or procedures to process applications, claims, or similar requests; Providing oral and written responses to public inquiries about program requirements; and using computer systems to enter and retrieve case information.
