This Maintenance Mechanic position is in Facilities Management Services at the VA Bedford Healthcare System located at the Bedford, MA location. This position is a full time 40 hour a week.
Major duties
The purpose of this position is to perform a wide range of work involving general maintenance of support work, survey of wards and buildings, review and completion of tasks in the Area Maintenance Log, maintenance and repair service equipment. Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Must possess the ability to work alone, with minimum supervision, to occasionally direct the work of other tradesmen or lower grade employees assigned to assist their work. Must test installs, maintains all electrical equipment, appliances and systems. Locates and diagnoses trouble in electrical systems or equipment and makes necessary changes or repairs, laying out, assembling and installing electrical equipment. Performs tasks in accordance with national electrical codes and accepted trades and practices. Keeps tools, instruments and equipment in good condition. Installs, modifies, maintains and repairs new and existing medium and low pressure steam heating systems and equipment such as steam heating, condensate and pump systems, radiators, valves, lines, etc., as well as thermostatic and pneumatic controls , for H.V,. units, associated fittings, valves and devices. Performs new construction or maintenance and repair in rough carpentry structural framing and form work. Works on interior and exterior finish carpentry, partitions, windows, doors, frames, building hardware, wall and floor covering products, acoustical work and exterior architectural trim. Performs other duties as assigned. Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year)Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience. Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child. Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66. Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA. Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement). Notifications: Current and former Federal employees may submit a copy of their most recent SF-50, (Notice of Personnel Action). The SF-50 must identify the position title, series, grade, step, tenure and type of service (Competitive or Excepted). More than one SF-50 may be submitted to show a higher or current grade held for at least one year. Award SF-50's will not be accepted. This position is covered by locality-based comparability pay.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: Required to climb ladders, reach and lift heavy loads over forty (40) pounds and walk long distances in a regular day's work. A great amount of kneeling, bending and climbing stairways is required. Must wear safety and protective clothing or equipment prescribed for the work setting. Working Conditions: At times, it is required to work in areas that are poorly lighted. Must be required to work both inside and outside in all types of weather. Works in areas where clothes and skin can be soiled by grease, dust and steam. Must be required to work in areas that are noisy such as pump rooms and areas that are exposed to gases, dust smoke and fumes. Works in all areas of the Medical Center, including contagious disease and/or contaminated areas. Required to work universal protection items, such as caps, gloves, gowns, mask, full face, or any safety equipment.
