What you'd do
The employee serves as the Electrician throughout the Sioux Falls VA Health Care System (SFVAHCS). The primary purpose is to install, modify, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair electrical systems, controls, circuits, and equipment throughout the medical center in support of patient care and facility operations.
Major duties
Major duties include but are not limited to: Install, modify, maintain, and repair electrical systems including power and lighting circuits, alarm and control systems, panel boards, motors, transformers, switches, distribution panels, and related devices to ensure continuous and safe operations for the health care facility. Plan and lay out work from wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, and specifications. Calculate conduit, wire, and load requirements. Diagnose problems and troubleshoot electrical systems and equipment. Identify and correct electrical deficiencies and hazards using appropriate testing and diagnostic equipment. Perform preventive maintenance, testing, cleaning, inspecting, lubricating, and adjusting electrical systems and components. Adhere strictly to safety policies and codes, working in compliance with the National Electrical Code (NEC), VA regulations, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards. Coordinate and communicate with contractors and other trades as needed to ensure timely completion of electrical tasks associated with construction, renovation, and maintenance projects. Performs other duties as assigned. What you need to qualify
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: You will be asked to participate in a pre-employment examination or evaluation as part of the pre-employment process for this position. Questions about physical demands or environmental factors may be addressed at the time of evaluation or examination. Work requires regular physical exertion, including frequent standing, walking, bending, crouching, kneeling, climbing ladders and scaffolds, and working in restricted or awkward positions for extended periods. Frequently lifts, carries, or moves objects and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally heavier items with assistance. Operates hand and power tools which require physical stamina and coordination. May be required to work at heights or in confined spaces. Work Environment: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, including in mechanical/electrical rooms, patient care areas, rooftops, and outside in all weather conditions. Exposed to hazards of electrical shock, burns, cuts, bruises, and falls from ladders, scaffolds, or slippery surfaces. Lighting, heating and ventilation in work area - incumbent is exposed to heat, restricted ventilation and poor illumination in areas such as equipment rooms. Weather conditions to which they are exposed when working outdoors - all weather conditions from an office to environmentally controlled space, to excessive heat such as in the boiler plant. Dust, grease, and soiling of clothing and skin surfaces - exposed to various hazardous materials while performing work assignments. Employee is provided with protective clothing, equipment, and safety devices for his personal protection.
