What you'd do

The Area Manager provides leadership and resource management (finance, human, and acquisition), leading the development and implementation strategy required to manage multiple area-wide IT End User Operations.

Major duties

Major Duties: Oversee the day-to-day operations, services, maintenance and security for all customers within their immediate geographic area. Use highly specialized knowledge of data communication technology, data base information management, distributive data processing, client/server and workstation architectures, WAN/LAN selection, acquisition, implementation and life-cycle management processes and modernization of office automation system/support is essential. Requires detailed knowledge of hardware, software, peripherals, and their relationships with the operational, technical and system architectures. Direct, review and participate in the design, development, implementation and maintenance of automated information systems and technical architectures in compliance with Congressional, VA, OI&T, and EUO directives. Identify and resolves root causes of problems that degrade delivery of essential Information Technology services. Lead and oversee IT management concept development that impacts all IT business processes, operations, and strategies. Identify solutions to facility IT challenges for resources allocation and provides advice and guidance regarding current and future information systems concepts, doctrine, methods, practices, operations and technologies. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm. Tour of duty may be subject to change based on organizational needs. Travel Required: Up to 25% travel may be required, as needed, for this position. Financial Disclosure Report: NOT Required. Some work may require walking and standing in conjunction with travel and attendance at meetings and conferences away from the work site. Travel requirement is up to 20% of the time. Some employees may carry light items, such as papers, books, or small parts, or drive a motor vehicle. The work does not require any special physical effort. Working Conditions: The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. The work environment involves every day risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions. Employee may occasionally be exposed to uncomfortable conditions in such places as research and production facilities.

What you need to qualify

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 07/24/2026. You may qualify based on your experience as described below: Basic Requirements Experience: Experience must be IT related; the experience may be demonstrated by paid or unpaid experience and/or completion of specific, intensive training (for example, IT certification), as appropriate. For all positions individuals must have IT-related experience demonstrating each of the five competencies listed below. The employing agency is responsible for identifying the specific level of proficiency required for each competency at each grade level based on the requirements of the position being filled. Attention to Detail - Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail. Customer Service - Works with clients and customers (that is, any individuals who use or receive the services or products that your work unit produces, including the general public, individuals who work in the agency, other agencies, or organizations outside the Government) to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services. Oral Communication - Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately. Problem Solving - Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations. AND Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-12 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience for this position is defined as: supervising or managing Information Technology delivery systems and equipment; utilizing strategic planning, budgeting, performance management and implementation of new, and maintenance of, existing operational hardware and software required for IT Support of all end users; AND identifying measures or indicators of system performance and the actions needed to improve or correct performance relative to the goals of the systems Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
