Lead Security Assistant
What you'd do
This position is located in Police Service. The primary purpose of the position is to lead a team of Security Assistants responsible for monitoring physical security equipment and systems.
Major duties
Duties include, but are not limited to: Instructs staff on specific tasks and provides guidance and technical direction; maintains current knowledge of procedures, policies, and directives Assists supervisor in planning work schedules, distributing assignments, and balancing workloads Works closely with and coaches subordinate staff with varying levels of training/expertise in identifying parameters of viable solutions Identifies problem areas and takes steps to resolve situations. Monitors working conditions for safety and security. Reports to supervisor on employee performance, progress, and training needs, and disciplinary problems to correct inappropriate conduct or performance Identifies and provides for training needs of subordinate staff and informs them of available services and activities Resolves simple, informal employee complaints and notifies higher-level supervisors of more complex issues that require high level of involvement Distributes and balances workload among employees in staff workflow; ensures timely accomplishment of assigned workload; ensures each employee has appropriate workload; keeps in touch with the status and progress of work, and makes day-to-day adjustments in accordance with established priorities; and obtains assistance from the supervisor on problems that may arise Recommends and initiates special studies, pilot programs, or other actions; and follows up to ensure OSP maintains progressive employee and programs Maintains current knowledge and answers questions of other employees on procedures, policies, directives, etc., and obtains needed information or decisions from supervisor on problems that come up; checks on work in progress or spot check work not requiring review, and reviews completed work to ensure that supervisor's instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines have been met Serves as technical expert and team lead for alarm and access monitoring operations. Provides guidance and direction to staff performing tasks such as tracing access patterns, programming systems, assigning or removing user permissions, updating databases, and remotely securing doors during routine and emergency operations Monitors and ensures proper response to alarm systems for fire, intrusion, duress/panic, medical emergencies, psychiatric emergencies, and other critical alerts. Oversees team compliance with emergency digital paging protocols and weather alert notifications Leads team efforts in implementing policies, procedures, and methods for identifying and protecting information, personnel, property, facilities, and operations Guides staff in conducting administrative investigations of lost keys, passes, and PIV cards to assess compromised access and terminate permissions promptly Serves as technical lead for emergency communications and dispatch operations. Provides guidance and direction to staff responsible for monitoring and receiving routine and emergency calls requiring police, fire, medical, or other emergency services Ensures team compliance with protocols for compiling information related to police and emergency incidents, responding to intrusion, duress, and hold-up alarms, and directing or modifying responses based on incident type Provides technical expertise in operating communications and security equipment, including computers, multi-frequency radios, multi-line telephone systems, and related peripherals Serves as technical lead for dispatch center operations, providing guidance and coordination to staff performing system checks on communications and security equipment Oversees equipment inventories, ensures accurate documentation of records and logs, and verifies completion of monthly alarm checks and reports Provides technical direction for entering, updating, and retrieving information from multiple computer systems and sensitive law enforcement databases, including state systems and the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) Provides guidance on generating police reports for routine, non-criminal cases and processing Courtesy Violation Notices (CVN) and U.S. District Court Violation Notices (USDCVN) Coordinates warrant confirmations and transport arrangements with outside agencies and ensures proper communication during health and welfare checks with external law enforcement partners Monitors team compliance with protocols for gathering and reporting information on incidents requiring notification to the VA Integrated Operations Center Leadership skills are involved in the majority of responsibilities for this position. What you need to qualify
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 08/03/2026. You may qualify based on your experience as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-5 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: the use of various computer, automation systems; computer skills in terms of data entry, compiling information, preparing and submitting reports, and database maintenance and management; maintaining confidentiality of information, both electronic and print; and communication and interpersonal relation skills sufficient to appropriately and courteously relate to internal and external customers both verbally and in writing.
