Major duties
The Staff Physician for Internal Medicine serves as a key member of both the Primary Care and Community Care teams at the VA Manchester Healthcare System, providing clinical and administrative expertise. The incumbent reports to the Chief, Office of Community Care (OCC). This dual role supports the mission to deliver comprehensive, coordinated, Veteran-centered health care. Primary Care Duties Provides direct primary care to Veterans in outpatient settings at the Manchester VAMC and Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs). Performs patient evaluations and physical exams, orders and interprets diagnostic tests (blood, fluid, imaging studies), formulates treatment plans, and provides appropriate medical care. Maintains timely, accurate documentation in the electronic medical record; completes progress notes and all required forms. Provides clinical guidance to PAs, NPs, and other clinical staff as requested. Responsible for the continuity and coordination of care within the Primary Care service line and across other specialty services as necessary. Manages acute and chronic illnesses, preventive screenings, patient education, and transitions of care. Participates in interdisciplinary teams to optimize patient-centered care, including communication with specialists, social workers, clinical pharmacists, and nurses. Fosters positive working relationships within Primary Care and with other VA staff. ensuring barriers to Veteran care are minimized. Participates in quality improvement and peer review activities, compliance readiness, hospital committees, department meetings, and initiatives to advance service delivery. Engages in continuous professional development, maintains BLS/ACLS certification, and completes all mandatory training on time. Serves as a preceptor, mentor, or educator for trainees, students, and other staff as assigned. Participate in staff meetings and serve on committees as requested. Community Care Duties Provides clinical and administrative expertise for the O??ice of Community Care (OCC). Ensures quality care coordination for Veterans receiving services in the community, including timely review and approval of consults, collaboration with community providers, and adherence to VA regulations. Serves as clinical advisor and resource on policy, procedure, and business matters affecting Community Care operations. Establishes a customer-oriented culture that values Veterans and staff feedback, implements best practices in service delivery, and empowers staff to resolve problems at the lowest possible level. Maintains effective communication and partnerships with community providers, local healthcare organizations, and affiliated networks. Stays abreast of national and VISN-level regulations and keeps staff informed of changes affecting Community Care. Collaborates on OCC budget and strategic planning. Shared Duties (Primary Care & Community Care) Maintains VA core values of integrity, commitment, advocacy, respect, and excellence. Complies with all Medical Sta?? Bylaws, Rules and Regulations, and applicable federal, state, and VA policies. Protects patient privacy, confidentiality, and security of sensitive data. Participates in education, quality improvement, and compliance activities as needed by either service line. Responds optimistically and proactively to changing circumstances and priorities. Work Schedule: The tours of duty are Monday through Friday with variable hours; these details will be discussed during the interview process, especially in relation to any executive orders or short-term assignments.
What you need to qualify
To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Qualifications Board Certified Physician (Family Practice, Internal Medicine). Knowledge of VA systems, regulations, and patient care management processes. Commitment to an interdisciplinary approach, strong administrative and interpersonal skills. Ability to coordinate care across VA and community settings, and communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR[(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR(3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Experience: Board Certification in ABIM (Internal Medicine) or ABFP (Family Medicine/ Practice) preferred. BLS/ACLS. Physical Requirements: Applicants must meet physical standards for the position. A physical examination prior to placement is required. This is a designated drug testing position. After appointment, you will be subject to random testing for illegal drug use. Requires lifting 15-44 pounds; pushing (approx. 2 hours); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers and both hands; walking and standing from 3-5 hours and kneeling. Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Must have depth perception and ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors. Hearing aid is permitted.
