Telecommunications Specialist (Intercepts)
What you'd do
This position is located in the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Rocky Mountain Field Division. This position(s) primary purpose is to support the technical expert in systems design, engineering, optimization, and modifications for large and diverse inventory of highly specialized state-of-the-art electronics, video, photographic, fixed, and mobile tracking, analog, and digital telecommunications.
Major duties
As a Telecommunications Specialist (Intercepts), your typical work assignments may include: Application of sensitive state of the art telecommunications equipment, applications, and computer systems that are used to track, monitor, and intercept radio and digital data signals. Providing advice, guidance, and strategies concerning the use of highly sophisticated telecommunication equipment and devices for use in active agency operations. Maintain, modify, or repair telecommunications equipment which may require installation or de-installation depending on the operational environment. Coordinate technical operations requiring covert tactics and strategies to maintain anonymity during criminal investigations while utilizing telecommunications systems and platform that intercept radio and digital communication signals. Perform tasks related to concealing, scanning, or enhancing the anonymity of signals transmitted or received from telecommunications devices in an operation under time constraints in various operational environments.

Qualification claims will be subject to verification. Basic Qualification Requirements: Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study -- electrical or electronic engineering, mathematics, physics, public utilities, statistics, computer science, telecommunications management, information systems management, business administration, industrial management, or other fields related to the position to be filled. Other Education: Communications/electronics or automatic data processing training in technical institutes or business schools above the high school level or in Armed Forces schools that included advanced instruction in addition to basic courses, may be substituted for general experience on a month-for-month basis. OR Specialized Experience: Experience in evaluating, analyzing, developing, managing, or improving communications systems, procedures, and requirements that demonstrated knowledge of current developments and trends in communications concepts and technology. AND You may qualify at the GS-09 level, if you fulfill the following qualification requirement: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (experience may have been gained in the private sector) that demonstrate your ability in: 1) Assisting in consulting with stakeholders to understand requirements, recommending solutions, and participating in the development of, installation and routine maintenance plans of equipment 2) Aiding in the designing, installing, repairing, and maintaining of electronic interception systems; 3) Assisting in ensuring data is captured, collected and stored on telecommunications devices and technologies. OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. You may qualify at the GS-11 level, if you fulfill the following qualification requirement: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service (experience may have been gained in the private sector) that demonstrate your ability in: 1) Assisting in guiding and consulting stakeholders to understand requirements, recommending solutions, and participating in the development of, installation and routine maintenance plans of equipment 2) Designing, installing, repairing, and maintaining electronic interception systems; 3) Ensuring data is captured, collected and stored on telecommunications devices and technologies; 4) Providing local and state level investigative personnel with technological solutions. OR Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M., if related OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages. Specialized experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
