What you'd do

This position is located within the Medicine Service at the South Texas Veterans Health Care System in San Antonio, TX. The Primary purpose of this position is to serve as an management assistant to the Chief of Medicine Service, the Administrative Officer, and the Supervisory Management Analyst, supporting the everyday operations of their assigned sections as well as the Medicine Service in general.

Major duties

Major Duties: Independently carries out recurring management and/or program analysis clerical or technical tasks or assignments without specific instructions Capable of doing quality and quantity of work expected; collecting necessary data and information; and desired timelines and outcomes. The employee independently carries out recurring clerical or administrative tasks without specific instructions however, instruction may be provided for new or difficult assignments. Requires knowledge of an extensive body of management and/or program analysis technical rules, guidelines, regulations, and precedents. Requires skill in applying basic data gathering methods, such as standard interviewing or surveying techniques, to collect various types of factual information. Compiling information, developing tracking and reporting procedures, refining processes, and analyzing data involve various actions or steps that are not completely standardized, prescribed in instructions, or precedent cases. Affects the accuracy, reliability, quality, and timeliness of management or program analysis products, recommendations, studies, projects, and processes. Affects the consistent use and control of publications, forms, records, directives, and other systems in local offices and organizations with similar administrative or information management needs. Examines the nature of each assignment or project to select, adapt, and apply the most suitable standards, procedures, and formulate conclusions; and make recommendations to higher-level employees or managers pertaining to the proper course of action in resolving problems within established guidelines. Analyzes the results of applying guidelines and adaptations and recommends changes to existing procedures or instructions The employee must interpret or adapt available guidelines because they lack specificity or are not completely applicable to the work requirements. The employee refers problems and unfamiliar situations not covered by instructions to the supervisor or higher level employee for further guidance. What you need to qualify

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 07/28/2026. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-04 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Reviewing documents for correct grammar, spelling, and errors; operating computer software programs, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint to create documents for review and publication; gathering information to write reports for various leaders for analysis to improve the efficiency, effectiveness, and productivity of an organization. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have four years above High School. OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond four years above High School.
