The United States Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia's mission is to enforce the criminal laws of the United States and the District of Columbia, represent the interests of the United States in civil litigation, and respond to the public safety needs of the community by leading an effective, well-coordinated law enforcement effort that contributes to the overall goal of improving the quality of life in the District of Columbia.

Major duties

This Lead Paralegal Specialist provides team leadership and coordination to three (3) or more Paralegal Specialists and Legal Assistants assigned the Major Crimes Section (MCS) One. The team provides technical support and expertise in all paralegal functions and services for the Major Crimes Section, which includes the full range of legal support. If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for providing Lead Paralegal Specialist support in the U.S. Attorney's Office, District of Columbia, located in Washington, District of Columbia, focusing in the areas of team leadership; managerial support; paralegal. Typical work assignments will include: Supports the management staff in executing the work and projects, leading the team of paralegal specialists in identifying, distributing and balancing the workload. Organizes the work and projects assigned to the team of paralegal specialists and communicates the organization's goals, objectives, procedures, and methodology to the team of paralegal specialists. Coaches and facilitates the duties and responsibilities performed by Paralegal Specialists and Legal Assistants on a regular and recurring basis. Provides a variety of legal assistance and technical work requiring a specialized knowledge of processes, procedures, and practices to support legal activities within the Major Crimes Section (MCS).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To be considered minimally qualified for this position, you must demonstrate that you have the required specialized experience and/or education for the respective grade level in which you are applying: To qualify at the GS-12 level, you must possess: Specialized Experience: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal service performing (obtained in either the public or private sectors) (2) of the (3) duties listed below: Leading a team of paralegal specialists in identifying, distributing or balancing the workload and tasks among paralegal specialists in accordance with established workflow and/or skill level; Providing legal support and technical work with in-depth specialized knowledge of legal research methods and analysis, laws, legal reference material, or litigation; Providing litigation case management to organize cases for court presentation by preparing and organizing exhibits containing a variety of visual material, e.g. statistical charts or photographs. TIME-IN-GRADE REQUIREMENTS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-11 is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-12 level. You must submit your SF-50 that shows Time-in-Grade eligibility and reflects your title, series, and grade. No award SF-50 will be accepted; recommended SF-50s include promotions and step increases (within grade increases).
