About the Position: This position is located at Barquist Army Health Clinic on Fort Detrick, Frederick, MD. This position provides industrial hygiene services to Barquist Army Health Clinic ensure high-quality patient care and facility operations. This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
Major duties
Perform industrial hygiene surveys and assessments and document data in the Defense Occupational and Environmental Health Readiness System. Assess the nature and magnitude of hazardous exposures, determine the effectiveness of existing control measures and ensure compliance with applicable regulations. Prepare standard operating procedures, guidance documents, training materials and program templates to facilitate the industrial hygiene mission. Conduct comprehensive and special surveys to identify and evaluate potential chemical, biological, physical and ergonomic health hazards and recommend corrective measures. Assess the need for samples and develop sampling and develop monitoring plans utilizing proper sampling techniques or procedures to determine nature and severity of hazards present. Review the work of Industrial Hygiene Technicians. Provide technical expertise and guidance to installation and organizational safety, occupational health and leadership on workplace health issues and concerns. Coordinate with occupational health providers to ensure appropriate medical surveillance is afforded to employees

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Basic Requirement for Industrial Hygienist: Degree: Bachelor's or graduate (or higher level) degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health Sciences, Occupational and Environmental Health, Toxicology, Safety Sciences, or related science. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) OR Related Degree: Bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. For engineering degrees to be acceptable, the curriculum must be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) OR Certification: Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH). (Note: You must attach a copy of your certification.) In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1). Identifying occupational health hazards, including those without established regulatory limits, 2). Evaluating the cause of hazardous exposure and providing viable courses of action and/or control measures, 3). Developing contingency plans to resolve industrial accidents, and 4). Executing quantitative sampling strategies to evaluate hazards utilizing real-time sampling instruments and analytical sampling methods. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
