Industrial Hygienist
What you'd do
This unit is responsible for providing oversight and technical consultation on all environmental, health, safety and security issues with the goal of providing and ensuring a safe and healthful environment for employees.
Major duties
The duties may include, but are not limited to: Assists with the management of hazardous waste, universal waste, and used oil at the NCAH. Manages the Respiratory Protection Program to include training, fit testing and selection of the proper type of respirator for the operation or hazard. Review contract, scope of work documents and construction plans for new construction and/or renovation to identify occupational or environmental hazards and insure specifications comply with local, USDA, and Federal health and safety requirements. Independently plans, maintains, and conducts training related to the Industrial Hygiene Program. Provides instructions, training, and advice to NCAH employees concerning industrial health hazards and possible approaches to their control. Maintains accessibility to chemical Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) to ensure personnel that are potentially exposed to a chemical have ready access. Determines methods, procedures and measuring devices for use in evaluating the extent to which hazards are present and the effectiveness of control procedures.
What you need to qualify
Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement, including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below. BASIC REQUIREMENT: A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; OR A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; OR Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH). Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable. FOR THE GS-11 LEVEL: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-09 level) that may have been obtained in the private or public (local, county, state, Federal) sectors which demonstrates: Conducts industrial hygiene inspections of establishments to assess work practices and environmental conditions for hazards to the health and safety of workers, and to detect violations of published health standards. Performs a variety of additional industrial hygiene functions, such as providing technical assistance to employers, following up on abatement actions to be taken by businesses, conducting literature searches related to a specific hazard. Prepares report or portion of report, citing violations and recommending penalties and abatement dates. OR 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree, or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in chemistry, biology, physics, statistics, or a related field. Note: Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for this grade level. TRANSCRIPTS are required if: This position requires specific coursework or a degree in a specific field to be basically qualified. You are qualifying for the position based on education. You are qualifying for this position based on a combination of experience and education. This education must have been successfully completed and obtained from an accredited school, college, or university. COMBINATION OF EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE AT THE GS-11 GRADE LEVEL: Applicants may have combinations of successfully completed education and specialized experience to meet total qualification requirements. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify for that grade level. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
