Motor Vehicle Operator
What you'd do
The Motor Vehicle Operator does a variety of diverse tasks which requires operating a motor vehicle on and off station to provide services which includes transportation of linen, contaminated waste, furniture and common everyday trash. This position is located at the VA Medical Center, West Haven Campus.
Major duties
Duties include work involved in the operation of gasoline, diesel, or electric powered wheeled vehicles to haul cargo, transport Linen, sewage and transport regulated medical waste (RMW). The vehicles are driven in restricted traffic environments on Government installations, over public roads and highways, or under cross-country conditions. Other duties include but are not limited to: Incumbent routinely operates a gasoline powered vehicle equipped with a ten-speed transmission and hydraulic tail lift. Vehicle has a gross weight of 12,800 pounds and can carry loads weighing up to 7,000 pounds. It is a van type truck and is normally loaded to capacity except for occasional special deliveries. Truck is generally driven on Medical Center grounds but may occasionally be driven on public highways. Incumbent must have a Valid C.D.L. license. Gathers, assembles, consolidates, and lifts bags of soiled linen into carts at all soiled linen collection areas within the Medical Center. These carts are loaded to capacity and pushed directly from the dock onto the truck or hoisted up to the truck from ground level using the hydraulic lift. Carts are secured on the truck and then transported to the laundry where they are unloaded and weighed on dock scale. All loading and unloading activities are done by hand. Truck is routinely sanitized following each soiled linen delivery to the laundry. Transports supplies, materials, RMW, sewage, or equipment or tools throughout the immediate installation, under limited traffic conditions, at low speeds or on public roads, under any traffic conditions, at highway speeds. Loads carts of clean linen onto truck at the clean laundry dock, delivers these carts to all linen distribution points and returns all empty linen carts, to the laundry for restocking. Incumbents adhere to established delivery schedules and time frames when completing these deliveries. Incumbent performs routine cleaning and maintenance on vehicle and equipment and reports other maintenance or repair needs to the Textile Care Manager or Work Leader. Prepares manifests for the transportation of contaminated needles and RMW for pick up or transport. Helps the Move Team use, move, and control heavy equipment, carry and set up ladders and work from ladders. Performs minor maintenance on vacuum cleaners, power scrubbers, buffers and polishers. Cleans floors using power scrubbers and buffers; washes walls using powered wall washing machines and vacuums with heavy industrial vacuum cleaners. Selectee must have a Valid CDL Drivers License and should have a safe driving record. Current and former Federal employees must submit copies of their most recent SF-50, (Notice of Personnel Action). The SF-50 must identify the position title, series, grade, step, tenure and type of service (Competitive or Excepted). In some cases, more than one SF-50 may be required to show a higher grade previously held.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Incumbent must be physically able to do a considerable amount of walking, standing, climbing ladders, stooping, bending and crawling. Incumbent must be able to work in congested areas in tight, cramped, or awkward positions. Incumbent may be required to carry and set up ladders and indoor scaffolding/staging. Incumbent may be required to lift or move heavy equipment or furniture that may weigh more than 50 pounds. Incumbent may be exposed to cleaning chemicals and be fit tested for proper PPE and respirator. Considerable effort may be required to change tires on vehicles. Working Conditions: Incumbent works in Medical Center throughout the facility. Since much of the work is done in patient care areas, the incumbent must be ever alert to the safety and well being of patients, visitors, staff and fellow employees. Duties may also involve working in tight, cramped, wet, dry and dusty areas. Incumbent may be exposed to skin irritations from strong chemical solutions. Incumbent may be subject to minor cuts, scrapes and bruises. Operates vehicles in all types of weather and traffic conditions.
