This position is in the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts, Probation and Pretrial Services Office, Training and Safety Division. The Training and Safety Division provides national training programs and sets professional requirements for U.S. probation and pretrial services officers. This position is designated as a secondary law enforcement position and is eligible for law enforcement officer (LEO) retirement coverage. Non-LEOs are eligible to apply for this position.

Major duties

The Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts (AO), Department of Program Services, Probation and Pretrial Services Office, Training and Safety Division is seeking a highly-organized and self-motivated Supervisory Probation Administrator (Training & Skills Branch Chief) to manage and lead the Training & Skills Branch (TSB). This position reports to the Training and Safety Division Chief. The Supervisory Probation Administrator (Training & Skills Branch Chief) position is designated as a secondary law enforcement position responsible for providing training for new federal probation and pretrial services officers at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center's Federal Probation and Pretrial Academy in Charleston, S.C. This position works in collaboration with other division and branch chiefs to advance projects and activities in support of the Probation and Pretrial Services Office's mission. Specialized duties include, but are not limited to: Managing the TSB's daily operations and administrative activities, including managing short- and long-term goals and ensuring the integration of branch initiatives with broader Probation and Pretrial Services Office objectives. Overseeing and managing the Initial Probation and Pretrial Training program. Overseeing the development, implementation, and evaluation of the the Federal Probation and Pretrial Academy training and skills curricula. Supporting the Federal Law Enforcement Training Accreditation for the Federal Probation and Pretrial Academy and its associated programs. Developing and implementing research-based training and skills programs. Serving as a liaison between the Probation and Pretrial Services Office and the Federal Probation and Pretrial Academy and the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, ensuring necessary training information is submitted in a timely manner. Providing expert consultation and advisory services on the federal probation and pretrial services system's training and skills policies and procedures to the Training and Safety Division Chief, Probation and Pretrial Services Office Chief and Deputy Chief, other AO executives, the Committee on Criminal Law of the Judicial Conference of the United States (JCUS), other JCUS committees, court unit executives, and court staff. Serving as a subject matter expert and providing oversight for the Federal Probation and Pretrial Academy training and skills policies and procedures. Providing fiscal oversight for TSB expenditures, including the development, justification, and execution of the branch's budget. Generalized duties include, but are not limited to: Managing all aspects of staff supervision, including assigning and reviewing work, and completing a full range of personnel actions, such as tracking time and attendance, training and professional development, conducting performance appraisals, and fostering a collaborative team environment. Conducting comprehensive research and trend analysis to provide data-driven recommendations for the enhancement of national programs such as adult education and strategic curriculum design. Collaborating with the Firearms and Safety Branch Chief to optimize the efficiency and effectiveness of the Federal Probation and Pretrial Academy operations. Representing the interests of the AO and PPSO in high-level engagements with senior leadership across federal law enforcement agencies. Cultivating and maintaining strategic partnerships with other U.S. probation and pretrial services offices to ensure requests for assistance from other districts are consistently applied.

What you need to qualify

Applicants must have demonstrated experience as listed below. This requirement is according to the AO Classification, Compensation, and Recruitment Systems which include interpretive guidance and reference to the OPM Operating Manual for Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions. Specialized Experience: Applicants must have at least one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience in each of the following: Developing, implementing, and evaluating probation or pretrial services training curricula. Providing leadership and administrative oversight of personnel.
