What you'd do

This position Serves as the Program Support Assistant in the Environmental Services (EVS) program section at the VA Bedford Healthcare System in Bedford Massachusetts. This position is full-time at 40 hours per week.

Major duties

This position's primary purpose is to provide administrative and clerical support to Environmental Management Service in all administrative functions. Duties include but are not limited to: Performs work involving the collection, compilation, and /or tracking of data and statistical information in support of the Environmental Services (EVS) program operation; Organizes data into Access databases or spreadsheet formats. Receives and processes documents and reports in accordance with established procedures; Reviews documents and reports for completeness and enters pertinent information into an automated tracking system or creates spreadsheets/databases to track them; Collects, assembles, and compiles data for recurring, special, and one-time administrative and management reports; Prepares a wide variety of recurring and nonrecurring correspondence, reports, and other documents; Uses VA software programs to access information in the Medical Center computer system; Prepares, executes, and/or tracks program specific information; Performs office automation duties using such software applications such as word processing, spreadsheet, electronic mail, desktop publishing, calendar, database, and/or graphics; Assists Environmental Services managers in handling all Union and Human Resources correspondence and personnel management documentation as needed; Assists with Onboarding/Offboarding of employees to include but not limit to updating timesheets, PIV issuance/turn-in, PIV appointment scheduling, updating required logs, filling out onboarding/offboarding required information in separate databases (LEAF). Serves as official timekeeper for the site and maintains service record cards for all employees; Assures that the information is kept up to date; and Assumes other related duties. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday; 7:00 am-3:30 pm. Telework: This position may be authorized for telework. Telework eligibility will be discussed during the interview process. Interchange Agreements with Other Merit System: Employees who occupy medical or medical-related positions and were appointed under 38 U.S.C. 4701(1) or (3) [formerly 38 U.S.C. 4104 (1) and (3)] must be serving in a full-time position without time limit and have served continuously for at least one year in this other merit system to be eligible to convert to the Title 5 System. Some exceptions to this rule may apply if you have previously acquired tenure under a Title 5 appointment. Current and former Federal employees must submit copies of their most recent SF-50, (Notice of Personnel Action). The SF-50 must identify the position title, series, grade, step, tenure and type of service (Competitive or Excepted). In some cases, more than one SF-50 may be required to show a higher grade previously held. This position is not a Bargaining Unit position.

What you need to qualify

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 08/07/2026. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-07 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-06. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-5 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled such as general office work using computers to create/edit/save documents, using telecommunication equipment such as telephone, e-mail and messaging to respond to inquiries and other functions. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level.
