The United States Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia's mission is to enforce the criminal laws of the United States and the District of Columbia, represent the interests of the United States in civil litigation, and respond to the public safety needs of the community by leading an effective, well-coordinated law enforcement effort that contributes to the overall goal of improving the quality of life in the District of Columbia.
Major duties
If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for performing discovery assignments in civil cases, especially those provisions and amendments addressing electronic discovery (e-Discovery) and utilizing automated litigation software applications and other resources to organize, review, analyze and compile information for use by attorney's in the litigation of a variety of civil cases in the Civil Division, United States Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia. Typical work assignments will include: Managing incoming and outgoing electronic discoveries and helping attorneys ensure documents are collected, reviewed, and produced in accordance with court procedures. Assisting attorneys with trial preparation by scanning, indexing, organizing, and retrieving large volumes of case information using electronic databases. Helping prepare and issue litigation hold notices to ensure relevant electronic and paper records are preserved. Working with Information Technology staff to monitor litigation support systems, resolve technical issues, and improve system performance. Maintaining, updating, closing, and archiving case files; tracking court dates and deadlines; recording service documents; scanning and routing case materials; and providing general administrative support to the Division.
What you need to qualify
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To be considered minimally qualified for this position, you must demonstrate that you have the required specialized experience and/or education for the respective grade level in which you are applying: To qualify at the GS-09 level, you must possess: Specialized Experience: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors) performing (3) of the (4) duties listed below: Collecting, organizing, reviewing, and producing electronic discovery in accordance with court rules, orders, and established procedures. Using litigation support software to search, analyze, store, retrieve, and present large volumes of case information and evidence. Preparing legal documents, correspondence, exhibits, and other case materials for attorney review, and conducting legal or factual research to support litigation. Maintaining litigation case files, tracking court filings and deadlines, assisting with trial preparation, and closing or archiving records in accordance with federal requirements. OR Education: Two full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree OR master's or equivalent graduate degree OR LL. B or J.D., in a related field (e.g., Law, Paralegal Studies, Legal Studies, Criminal Justice). Education must be obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the position. OR Combination of Experience and Education: Applicants must possess a combination of the above-described graduate education and specialized experience such that they total 100% of the stated minimum qualifications for the GS-09 level. Only graduate education beyond the first year (18 semester hours) may be used when combining education and experience for this option. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
