Supervisory Attorney-Examiner (Civil Rights)
What you'd do
As a Supervisory Attorney-Examiner (Civil Rights) at the GS-0905-14, you will be part of the Hearings Division, Federal Sector Hearings Program, Office of Field Programs, U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. If selected, you will serve as a Hearings Unit supervisor and provide guidance and direction to attorney examiners (administrative judges), paralegals, and other staff, including supporting clerical staff.
Major duties
Develops, administers, coordinates, and evaluates cases for the Commission's Federal Sector Hearings Program. Makes rulings on relevance of witnesses and the collection of information concerning cases. Attends meetings and conferences with legal representatives particularly in class cases. Analyzes factual and legal issues, and hearing evidence, asks legal fact-finding questions, and reviews the case prior to making findings and recommendations to the agency. Reviews reports, exhibits, and local memoranda (investigative file) to ensure case charges are adequate for a hearing. Responsible for ensuring the timely and effective processing of all Federal Sector discrimination complaints within the District, from initial receipt and docketing to assignment and final resolution. Supervises and provides technical guidance to a staff of administrative judges, paralegals, and other staff, including clerical support personnel.
What you need to qualify
For the GS-14: You must have earned a professional law degree (J.D. or LL.B.) from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association, be an active member of the BAR, and have 3 years of professional legal experience with at least one year being equivalent to the 13 level. Professional legal education above the first professional law degree may be substituted for experience required as follows:(a) The second professional law degree (LL.M) may be substituted for one year of experience (b) The third law degree (J.S.D) may be substituted for one year of experience beyond the LL.M. Applicants must meet all eligibility requirements (e.g., time-in-grade and qualification requirements) within 30 days of the closing date specified in the vacancy announcement. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
