General Maintenance Mechanic
What you'd do
This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: Works as a member of a maintenance unit work force for inland marine navigation structures, flood control structures, associated facilities, and occasionally general structures, facilities, or equipment that do not relate to flood control or navigation.
Major duties
Perform routine and non-routine equipment maintenance on Lock, Dam, and Flood control structure operating equipment. Operate, maintain and repair plant equipment belonging to the Maintenance Section. Install, repair and maintain high pressure piping system such as hydraulic, high pressure air, or oil line systems. Operate a large mobile crane and overhead gantry cranes. Plan and perform work, utilizing blueprints or layout sketches. Perform structural repairs and/or fabrication of gates, valves, piping systems, mooring pilings, bulk heads, masonry, concrete, wooden structures and other necessary components at USACE facilities or along waterways and levee systems.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Note: If selected at WG-10 level, the incumbent must be willing to obtain and maintain a Class A Commercial Driver's License within 24 months from the date of hire. (The exact time frame is at management discretion.) Note: If selected at WG-10 level, the incumbent must be willing to obtain and maintain a 4G Welding Certification with 24 months from the date of hire. (The exact timeframe is at management discretion.) Note: If selected at WG-11 level, the incumbent must currently possess a Class A Commercial Driver's License and a 4G Certification in Welding.(A copy of your valid Class A CDL and 4G Welding Certificate must be submitted with this application.) Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element) WG-10: Ability to do the work of a(n) General Maintenance Mechanic without more than normal supervision which includes, assisting in performing structural repair and fabrication of steel, concrete, masonry, wood, gates, valves, piping systems using welding and construction techniques; and maintaining and repairing mechanical equipment associated with locks, dams, flood control structures, hydraulic systems, pumps, and gearboxes.- Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element) WG-11: Ability to do the work of a(n)General Maintenance Mechanic without more than normal supervision which includes, performing structural repairs and fabrication of steel, concrete, masonry, wood, gates, valves, and piping systems using welding and construction techniques; maintaining and repairing mechanical equipment associated with locks, dams, flood control structures, hydraulic system, pumps, and gear boxes; and operating heavy equipment and maintenance machinery, including cranes, forklifts, generators, welding equipment, boats, barges, and tractors.- Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Physical Effort: Work normally requires frequent standing, stooping, stretching, climbing, and crouching. Lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds. Carries objects weighing up to 30 pounds for short distance on an occasional basis. All major duties of the position performed in locations where extensive standing, stooping, stretching, climbing and lifting are not necessary to effectively accomplish the tasks. Uses normal coordination of eyes, hands, legs and body in installing,repairing, operating, or testing equipment in locations easily accessible such as lockwalls,machinery recesses, lock chambers maintenance shops and yards. Occasionally climbs short ladders (i.e., to gain access to crane cab and machinery recess, etc.). Occasionally works from scaffolding and suspended stages. Directs lower graded employees to assist and to accomplish heavy lifting and carrying. Working Conditions: Works inside and outside during the day or night, subject to inclement weather, on high structures usually over water, which is frequently turbulent, in the proximity of moving machinery and high voltage electrical equipment on scaffolds and from slings. Occasionally will work behind bulkheads below the water level. Incumbent is also subject to falls, drowning, injury or discomfort and when inside, exposure to drafts, changing temperatures, and loud noises. Uses safety equipment such as protective ear devices, hard hats, hard toe shoes, respirators, and protective clothing. Working conditions have been considered in the evaluation of the job and environmental differential pay is not warranted for duties performed. Is normally assigned to the day shift, but is subject to call during other shifts in case of extreme emergency or other conditions requiring round-the-clock repair activities to restore lock to operational status.
