This Industrial Equipment Mechanic position is located in the Operations Section of Facilities Management Service at the Ft. Meade Campus of the VA Black Hills Heath Care System (VA BHHCS). The primary duties and responsibilities of the Industrial Equipment Mechanic are to maintain, repair and service building service equipment and facility vehicles.

Major duties and responsibilities include: Uses standard test procedures to trace and locate problems Overhauls and repairs a wide range of makes, models, and types of mechanical, electrical, and mechanical/electrical equipment Makes exact adjustments, on precise timing of gears, alignment of shafts, and adjustments of contact points and electrical motor parts Responsible for maintenance and minor repair of facility vehicles Installs and repairs complex equipment and machinery. Involving PLC controls and series connected machines Examine and troubleshoot machinery and equipment to determine the extent of repairs required, materials or parts needed, and to estimate the time required to complete repair interpret and apply the requirements contained in technical manuals, shop directives, multi-view blueprints, and other documents in determining critical dimensions and key reference point Dismantle, move, and relocate various types of industrial plant machinery and equipment or install new machinery and equipment Other duties as assigned Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:00am-4:30pm Compressed/Flexible Schedule: Compressed schedule available Position Description Title/PD#: Industrial Equipment Mechanic/PD202630 Relocation/Recruitment Incentives: Not Authorized The VA Midwest Health Care Network advocates for a Whole Health System of care in each of the Medical Centers. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 08/07/2026. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Driver's License Requirement: Must possess a valid state-issued Driver's License to operate a motor vehicle. (Please do not submit a copy of your license with your application package. You will be required to show your valid state-issued Driver's License at the time of your interview.) Physical Requirements: Frequently handles objects weighing 45 pounds and occasionally carry objects weighing 45 pounds and over for considerable distances. Pushes, pulls, reaches, walks, stands, crawls, kneels, bends and works in cramped positions over and under machinery of all types for sustained periods of time. Work requires disassembly and reassembly of large heavy duty commercial equipment components. You will be asked to participate in a pre-employment examination or evaluation as part of the pre-employment process for this position. Questions about physical demands or environmental factors may be addressed at the time of evaluation or examination. Working Conditions: Work is usually performed Inside areas that are adequately lighted, ventilated and heated. Floor and deck surfaces are sometimes uneven, wet or oily and slippery. Frequent exposure to moving objects and sharp edges with the possibility of cuts and bruises, and to noise and vibration from machines, occasionally climbs and works from ladders and equipment staging points, possibility of serious injury from slipping and falling. Dirt, grease, and dampness are frequently encountered. Various protective devices such as hard hats, gloves, safety shoes, and safety glasses are used.
