What you'd do
This position is located at the Northern Arizona VA Health Care System (NAVAHCS) located in Prescott, AZ. This position is part of Facilities Management Service. The Electrician is assigned a wide variety of duties of a journeyman involving installation, modification, repair, troubleshooting, maintenance, and testing of complex electrical systems, circuits, equipment, appliances, controls, components, lighting fixtures, and fire alarm systems.
Major duties
Duties include but not limited to: Makes mechanical and electrical tests and visual inspection to determine causes of malfunctions or conditions which may cause breakdown or safety hazards. Utilizes manufacturer's blueprints and specifications to determine proper replacement of parts or other information to aid in troubleshooting, repair, or modification. Disassembles, makes repairs and reassembles all trade related device and/or equipment. Performs preventive maintenance and operating checks on electrical and mechanical devices. Performs visual examinations, inspections, technical research, and operational tests to determine the need for, and the performance of, installing, modifying, overhauling, troubleshooting, and repairing facility systems on all level of difficulty and responsibility requiring skill, knowledge, and experience predominately in the electrical trade to perform work on equipment, switch- gear, high voltage power lines above and below ground, and all other components that comprise station electrical systems. Works on project objectives proposed by engineers, including planning and laying out the sequence of work from drawings or blueprints which may be incomplete regarding the specific wiring required in the unique application of equipment. Completes project requirements within timelines and standards of safety. Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday, 08:00am - 04:30pm Position Description Title/PD#: Electrician/PD11653A Physical Requirements: Electricians at this grade make repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and other hard to reach places. Electricians are required to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. They frequently lift and carry tools, equipment, and parts that weigh up to 20 pounds, and occasionally up to 40 pounds. Movement of items weighing more than 40 pounds will be accomplished with assistance.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Electric Drawings Electrical Equipment Technical Practices Troubleshooting (Electrical) Use and Maintain Hand Tools (Electrical Work) Without more than normal supervision Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Preferred Experience: Commercial Healthcare experience and background experience is preferred. Commercial and/or industrial experience is acceptable.Residential and/or handyman expereince and background will not be considered. Medium voltage background and experience is highly preferred, however training can ve provided. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
