Maintenance Supervisor
What you'd do
This Maintenance Supervisor position is located at Iowa City VA Health Care System in Iowa City, Iowa. The incumbent participates with the Facility Engineer, the Maintenance and Operations Supervisor, and other Supervisors in the overall operation of Facility Management with specific responsibilities over the Heating Ventilation Air-Conditioning (HVACX) and Refrigeration Shop, Plumbing Shop, and Controls Shop.
Major duties
Major duties include but are not limited to: Supervises, plans, coordinates and directs a variety of maintenance and operational issues and concerns as they relate to the Iowa City VAMC. Assigns work schedules and assignments to specific craftsman, initiate work orders, monitors the Preventive Maintenance Program. Establishes procedures used to troubleshoot problems, plans, jobs, and evaluate operations. Reviews and analyzes production, cost and personnel utilization records to evaluate and conduct research to gather information for supplies or parts. Identifies training needs to make sure that all personnel meet all mandatory requirements and maintain subordinate employee performance program. Assigns and explains work requirements to the workers and sets deadlines establishing sequence of operations. Addresses administrative issues of staff assigned to the section including approving leave, assigning overtime, counseling and initiating disciplinary actions. Installs, inspects, maintains and repairs structural and trade practices. Serves as the Contracting Officer Representative (COR) for contracts that support the operation of the VA Medical Center. Manages the operations, maintenance, repair, replacement or additions to the services of all utilities and systems on or to and from the station, including water, gas, steam, condensate-return, oxygen, medical-air, and sewers. Coordinates work with utility companies (electrical, sewer and water), plans for emergency shutdowns when the services are at a minimum to have the least impact on patient care. Maintains and prepares required reports and records and sees to it that employees observe regulations and rules of conduct and safety. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 08/07/2026. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: The employee must be in good physical condition, capable of responding to emergency situations. He/she must be capable of accessing all equipment locations in the Medical Center and controls as needed, and be able to day any necessary bending, lifting, walking, climbing and other strenuous physical movements required by a plumber. The campus layout of this Medical Center requires walking considerable distances due to the proximity of buildings. You will be asked to participate in a pre-employment examination or evaluation as part of the pre-employment process for this position. Working Conditions: A portion of the Supervisor's work is performed in an office environment, however, when required to operate and/or perform repairs, the incumbent must be aware of the life-taking hazards of handling high steam pressure, improper sanitation by waste removal, use of highly combustible or explosive materials and gases, working in high temperature confined areas and the use of highly toxic agents. He/she may be exposed to dust, dirt, soot and noise in the performance of duties.
