What you'd do

You will serve as a Park Guide within the National Park Service, Reconstruction Era National Historical Park, Division of Interpretation in Beaufort, SC. This position is being filled under the Field Unit Local Hiring Authority (FUL). See below under Additional Information for further eligibility guidance.

Major duties

At the full performance level (GS-05) the major duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following: Provides pre-established talks normally following a prescribed outline and requiring application of broad subject-matter knowledge of the features of interest peculiar to the site. Answers a wide variety of visitor questions and provides back orientation to visitors while staffing a front desk in a visitor center. Guides parties (of up to 20-30 people) on walking tours in both an historic downtown setting and in a semi-rural setting. Utilizes GSA and park vehicles (requires Valid Driver's License). Provides a wide range of services to visitors, including assistance with lost articles, basic first aid, and provides information about park and community orientation. Follows a standard operating procedure for opening and closing a visitor center. Performs minor maintenance duties to ensure a clean, safe work area. Works collaboratively with a small team of staff and volunteers. Salary Range Information (Per Annum): GS-05: $40,736 - $52,957 per annum *First time hires to the federal government typically start at the beginning salary in the range for their respective grade level. What you need to qualify

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. All candidates must also meet Time-in-Grade requirements if applicable. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. Failure to adequately provide information needed to determine number of hours worked in each position may result in that time not being credited when evaluating qualifying experience. For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected. Minimum Qualification Requirements: To qualify for this position at the GS-05 level, you must meet the A) Specialized Experience, B) Education or C) Combination of Education and Experience requirements as described below. A) Specialized Experience: To qualify for the GS-5, you must possess at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-4 grade level in the Federal service, or comparable experience not gained through Federal service. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience is defined as: Experience that involved oral presentation of historical, scientific, or program information to groups; or Experience developing and/or revising technical, historical, or scientific information for oral presentation to groups. -OR- B) Education: Successful completion of four years of education above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation, such as American history, science, public speaking, parks and recreation, education or communications. -OR- C) Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience that totals 100% of the required specialized experience. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
