This position serves as an advance technician for outpatient care setting in the Podiatry clinic. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Intermediate Care Technician (ICT) program is a program designed to hire transitioning service, National Guard, Reserve, and Veteran Corpsmen, combat medics and medical technicians into positions at VA Medical Centers as an integral part of the medical Team. Candidates generally qualify based on U.S. Armed Forces experience or equivalent education.
Major duties
The Intermediate Care Technician (ICT) is an occupational specialty, especially for former military combat medics, medical technicians, and Corpsmen. As an ICT, you will operate within clearly defined clinical competencies. Prior to deployment to the identified site specific location, travel to Atlanta, GA VAHCS for hands-on training for certification in and specific to podiatry for basic foot care competencies is required by the incumbent. Duration of hand-on training may vary based on current competencies and skill sets, however may range from 2-8 weeks. Additional travel requirement 1 week annually for first 3 years of employment for re-certifications. Performs ongoing patient care duties in an outpatient clinical setting. ICTs may perform tasks as outlined in this Position Description (PD) and in accordance with local policies after documented completion of training and demonstration of appropriate skills and competency. Performing observation-based screening and collecting patient information in collaboration with licensed personnel. This may involve completing clinical reminders, obtaining patient health history, chief complaints, medication history, and identification of health-related conditions that may impact the patient's health status. Will complete the approved templates and tools, such as the outpatient intake form, normal results notes, and follow up treatment protocols established by the agency. Assists in behavioral/psychiatric situation in an outpatient setting. This can include assisting licensed personnel with crisis intervention, management of aggressive or suicidal psychiatric patients, by providing one-to-one observations and applying prevention and management of disruptive behavior techniques (PMDB). Performs duties focused on communication techniques required to complete the questioners and templates approved for use in any outpatient clinic setting, including active listening, restating, and mirroring. Maintain a safe and therapeutic environment for the patient. Assists outpatient licensed staff with the delivery of care to patients with complex, specialized, and potentially life-threatening situations. Assists licensed staff with preparing patients for medical evaluation, setting up equipment, passing instruments and providing treatment during inperson or virtual visits. Operates specialized medical equipment to obtain diagnostic and therapeutic outcomes. Collect a wide range of specimens and prepare them for transfer to processing. Knowledge of (BLS), (AED), and (AHA) protocols. Perform medication administration, topical medications, limited PO medications, emergent medications. Wound care, Bandaging, application of dressings and wound measurements Patient education within the scope of care or while providing an intervention. Example: postprocedural care and wound care. Assisting with patient exams and screening, utilizing technology such as telehealth peripherals. Examples: podiatry foot exams (visual, sensory, and vascular), gait exams, and stance exams. Electronic Health Record (EHR): Thoroughly and appropriately documents actions, interventions and procedures in the medical record. Examples: Procedural notes and progress notes, screenings, photo-documentation, telephone contact, and secure messaging. ICTs may perform tasks after proper education, training, and competency, demonstrating knowledge, skills, and abilities. Thoroughly and continually documents actions, interventions and patient response in the health record. Performs other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday; 8:00am-4:30pm. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 08/10/2026. You may qualify based on your experience as described below: Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR): The Health Aid and Technician Series, 0640, has a minimum qualification entry requirement. Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. In addition to the Individual Occupational Requirement, you may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-6 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Medication administration; assisting outpatient licensed staff with the delivery of care to patients with complex, specialized, and potentially life-threatening situations; assisting in behavioral/psychiatric situations in an outpatient setting; operating specialized medical equipment to obtain diagnostic and therapeutic outcomes; (e.g, ECG, blood pressure, and glucometer); preparation of lab specimens and transfer to the lab for processing (Examples: Labeling, placing in the proper bin or tube system); assisting licensed personnel with crisis intervention, management of aggressive or suicidal psychiatric patients, by providing one-to-one observations and applying prevention and management of disruptive behavior techniques; Treatments and interventions (e.g., Cryotherapy, incision and drainage, ambulation, and Foley coude' catheter insertion); providing wound care. Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have One full year of Graduate education where it is directly related to the work of the position. Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts English Language Proficiency: Individuals serving in direct patient care positions must be proficient in [both] spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d). Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: In addition to the experience or education above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: Practical knowledge of major body systems Working knowledge of topographic anatomy Working knowledge of diagnostic signs Knowledge of protocol-approved list of medications Working knowledge of emergency medicine techniques and emergency communication Knowledge sufficient to understand the legal considerations of emergency medicine Working knowledge of acute and chronic mental health conditions and crises Preferred Qualifications: Experience in the military as a Hospital Corpsman, Combat Medic, Medical Technician is highly desired. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Requirements: Regular and recurring duties may be performed in a countinuous, uninterrupted manner, or at recurring intervals. The work involves extended periods of heavy moving and lifting of patients. Generally, the work requires recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, and positioning of patients. It is not anticipated that the work would regularly require the incumbent to defend himself/herself from physical attack.
