What you'd do
The Medical Instrument Technician (Polysomnography) performs overnight and daytime sleep studies including polysomnography, CPAP/BiPAP titration, Multiple Sleep latency Tests (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Tests (MWT). The technician independently acquires physiological data, monitors patients, scores studies and ensures safe, high quality sleep diagnostics. The position requires knowledge of sleep physiology, respiratory patterns, cardiac rhythms, and technical trouble shooting.
Major duties
Duties include but not limited too: The technician performs a full range of standard, but complex diagnostic testing including overnight sleep studies, home sleep testing, MSLT ( multiple sleep latency tests), MWT (maintenance of wakefulness test) and PAP (positive airway pressure) titrations. They will educate patients on purpose and procedure of these diagnostics tests. The technician will operate computerize polysomnograms for recording continuous all-night physiological data including EEG, EOG, EKG, EMG, and respiratory parameters. The technician will operate home sleep test monitors for recording continuous all-night physiological data including EKG, respiratory effort devices, nasal pressure devices, oximetry and laboratory computers. They will enter the prosthetics supply or equipment consult as needed for provider signature. They serve as mentor and providing training to lower level technicians in these procedures. The technician will work with a variety of brands and types of PAP, (CPAP, BIPAP, BIPAP ST, ASV and others) and mask interfaces. The technician will know medical terminology, anatomy, physiology as it relates to sleep orders. What you need to qualify

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part. GS-8 Medical Instrument Tech (Polysomnography) Grade Determination: To qualify at the GS-8 full performance level, you must possess at least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level AND demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities below: Advanced knowledge or the International Classification of Sleep Disorders and the ability to recognize uncommon and/or rare sleep disorders. Ability to summarize and report polysomnographic data in narrative form. Knowledge of event characteristics (e.g., respiratory, cardiac, sleep stage, seizures, etc.) and ability to take appropriate action. Ability to provide briefings and orientation to hospital staff including physicians. This represents the full performance level. At this level Polysomnographic Technicians are able to interact fully with the patient and physician to diagnose sleep disorders including those that are uncommon or rare. They are able to conduct full sleep studies including overnight studies and evaluate the relationship of events, sleep stages, and possible medical conditions which influence or result from events occurring during sleep. They anticipate problems likely to occur during the sleep study and prepare for such situations, make changes in established procedures, or recommend alternative courses of action. They are able to mentor lower graded technicians. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Preferred Experience: Certification by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT), Experience working directly with patients in a clinical setting, particularly in a sleep study environment. The potential candidate will need to have greater than one year clinic experience. Physical Requirements: Physical Requirements: This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, and sitting, lifting, carrying, pushing, reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, both hands, both legs and repeated bending. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders; Emotional and Mental Stability: The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Must complete annual Employee Health requirements, such as annual TB screening or testing, as a condition of employment.
