What you'd do
This position is located within the Department of the Interior, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Region 7, Marine Mammals Management office, Anchorage, Alaska. Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) rate of 1.49% is authorized.
Major duties
Some of the major duties you will perform include but are not limited to the following: Independently coordinates activities with involved agencies, researchers, and other stakeholders, including state and county officials, Native American tribes and special interest groups and or/ private organizations to identify and resolve technical and administrative issues of local and national significance. Coordinates, collects and processes field data for analysis according to established procedures, as methods and techniques. Gathers, organizes, and interprets a wide variety of biological, ecological, pathological, public use data or other information pertinent to scientific studies. Interacts with the public news media, other federal agencies, university professionals, Native American officials, and state government officials for the purpose of disseminating scientific and resource information. Maintains contact and communication with biologists throughout the assigned organization and the Service, as needed, and with other agencies (federal, tribal, and state) with similar programs. Develops and maintains computer databases; and gathers, analyzes, tabulates and summarizes scientific, programmatic, and/or budgetary data. Prepares technical reports, briefings, presentations, and training materials on analytical findings and recommendations.
What you need to qualify
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement - 08/14/2026-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Competitive candidates must also meet Time-in-Grade requirements as defined in 5 CFR 300, Subpart F. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of specialized experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the work schedule requirement as the service dates will be reflected. For all other applicants who are not current federal employees, your resume must state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. To qualify for this position, you must meet the following Basic and Specialized Experience requirements: Basic Requirement: A. Degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. . You must submit transcripts. -OR- B. Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Specialized Experience Requirement: Possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience includes: establishing positive working relationships/partnerships with Indigenous cultures and communities in Alaska; marine mammal harvests or hunting, and/or biology studies; utilizing data entry, management, summation, and filing management skills; and traveling in small boats and/or aircraft to remote communities, and working in challenging and dynamic environmental conditions. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
