What you'd do

The primary purpose of the position of Secretary is to provide full Administrative and secretarial sup-port assistance to the Office of the Nurse Executive\ADPCS, VA Fresno Healthcare System in Fresno, California (VACCHCS).

Major duties

The incumbent will serve as a Secretary (OA), with responsibility for coordinating all office administrative and secretarial procedures and provides direction for all clerical duties assigned to the office in support of the Assoc. Dir. Patient Care Ser-vices/Nurse Executive\ADPCS, VA Fresno Healthcare System in Fresno, California. Exercises exclusive control over Nurse Executive/ADPCS's calendar with complete authority for notifying appropriate staff of needed information and recommendations necessary for the meetings. Direct contact with officials of the Central Office, Regional Office, University of California, San Francisco and local military officials, VSO's, Congressional offices, and community leaders which also frequently entail comprehensive fact-finding, management of activities, and coordination of schedules. Provide support to personnel visiting the facility, providing the visitor with a trip pack, makes recommendations for lodging and provides map, instructions, and details as required. Screens calls and visitors to the Executive Leadership Office supporting and providing assistance and refers others to the appropriate staff member within or outside of the office. Develops spreadsheets, graphs, and presentations to assist in displaying information and compiles reports, plans, and studies for publication to a broad audience. Arranges events, planning conferences and meetings to include obtaining a venue while ensuring that the venue meets the needs of the event, conference and/or meeting and follows all guidelines and ensures that the appropriate personnel are invited and that all logistics is handled in advance. Duties require knowledge of clerical and administrative procedures and requirements, various office skills, and the ability to apply such skills in a way that increases the effectiveness of others. Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level (GS-08) without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level. Work Schedule: 8:00AM-4:30PM (Monday-Friday) Virtual: This is not a virtual position. What you need to qualify

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 08/05/2026. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-07 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-06. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. You may qualify based on your experience as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-06 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Performing clerical/administrative duties in an office environment; answering and directing phone calls; receiving visitors; preparing correspondence; maintaining files/records; and using a computer to perform a variety of support tasks; scheduling and managing a calendar of appointments. At this level of grade, applicants should have good verbal and written communication skills and the ability to perform assignments independently with minimal oversight. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week. Preferred Experience: Minimum 3 years experience providing executive level administration support in a healthcare/nursing environment Experience coordinating complex schedules, preparing correspondence and facilitating effective communication among senior leaders Ability to manage confidential information, prioritize multiple tasks and support operations You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position: Administration and Management Customer Service Flexibility Writing Organizational Awareness Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: The work is sedentary. It occasionally requires carrying of light objects such as files, books and papers; some walking, standing and bending.
