The position is located within the FAA, Aviation Safety (AVS), Office of Aerospace Medicine (AAM), Aerospace Medical Education Division. The Office of Aerospace Medicine (AAM) develops and manages medical programs in support of Aviation Safety.
Major duties
As a member of the Airmen Education Physiological Training or Global Survival Training Program for FAA Flight Crew, performs multiple and varying assignments under the limited direction of a team leader or more experienced team member and is responsible for planning, developing, conducting, and evaluating a comprehensive nationwide Physiological Training or Global Survival Training Program for FAA flight crew. This training is conducted at the Civil Aerospace Medical Institute (CAMI). Applies experience and advanced knowledge to develop lesson plans and training aids; and provides detailed instruction. Conducts a comprehensive training program in the following areas: Physics of atmosphere, respiration and circulation, hypoxia, hyperventilation, decompression sickness, cabin pressurization and decompression, oxygen equipment operation and usage, smoke mask operation and usage, noise hazards, self-imposed stress, pilot disorientation, drugs, egress and evacuation, night vision, and in survival when the aircraft is in the water, arctic, desert or mountain terrain. Responsible for keeping current in the latest developments and techniques in civil and military training programs, and incorporating this information into the FAA programs where applicable. Demonstrates considerable independence in planning time and appropriate use of assigned resources to accomplish projects/programs/activities. On a rotating basis, is responsible for administering and scheduling training. Serves as instructor, operator and/or observer in the low pressure chamber utilized by CAMI, and performs maintenance on such chambers and allied equipment as necessary. Interviews each trainee to prevent unwarranted chamber reactions because of the trainee's physical condition. Because of the hazardous environment, must recognize life-threatening signs and administer proper and timely response. Demonstrates the use of various types of oxygen equipment prior to altitude chamber flight and briefs students on safety precautions associated with such equipment. Observes students in the chamber for hypoxia symptoms, hyperventilation, decompression sickness, and ensures all precautions are taken to avoid accidents. Contacts are internal and external, providing information about the FAA application of procedures as a member of the Airmen Education team. Lectures in the field of aeromedical education and survival training at accident prevention programs, flight instructor revalidation clinics, pilot examiner clinics, aviation education workshops, flying clubs, aeronautical institutes, aviation departments of colleges and universities, flying schools, air races, air shows, and professional meetings throughout the country. Consults and advises various FAA departments in matters concerning oxygen equipment configurations, proper oxygen equipment, regulators for crews and passengers, and the various factors of a hostile environment. Ability to provide consultations and recommendations to individuals and groups involved in special aviation projects concerning aviation physiology and survival situations, including research tasks requiring utilization of low pressure chamber, advising on oxygen equipment configuration, instrumentation readout, interpretation of electronic measurements, and various other components needed to accurately control barometric pressure, humidity, temperature, oxygen concentrations, etc., to accomplish the desired environment necessary for accurate research findings. Operates training aids such as vertigo producing devices, night vision goggles, oxygen equipment mock-ups, visual illusion devices, life vests, rafts, survival kits, and noise attenuating devices. Provides guidance, advice, and instruction to industry personnel and private organizations regarding regulations and advisory releases in the field of aviation physiology. Explains FAA policies on physiological training to other members of the agency and the flying public.
What you need to qualify
To qualify at the FV-H (FG/GS-12) level, you must demonstrate in your application that you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the FV-G (FG/GS-10/11) level. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. Specialized experience includes: Analyzing training programs to identify knowledge gaps or deficiencies Developing evaluative methods, procedures and standards to analyze education and training needs for employee development Determining the need for and initiating changes/updates in course content due to technological changes or new developments in the field Consulting with management to develop strategies, policies, or procedures to improve the development and design of training programs AND Physical Requirements: You must be able to perform efficiently the essential functions of the position without hazard to yourself or others including the ability to climb ladders, pick up moderately heavy objects, ability to tolerate close places, and be subjected to moderate but rapid changes in temperature and altitude. Selectee must possess or have the ability to pass a FAA Class II Physical Examination. Applicants should provide examples of Specialized Experience in their Work History.
