Major duties
This position is located within the Department of the Interior, Office of the Secretary, Office of Communications. The official duty station will be negotiated upon selection. At the full performance level GS-13 the major duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following: Serve as deputy communications lead and national press secretary for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, providing strategic communications counsel on national priorities, emerging issues, and high-profile media matters. Advise FWS and Department of the Interior leadership on communications strategy and reviews complex, sensitive, and high-visibility communications products for policy and messaging alignment. Provide guidance and policy interpretation to communications professionals across the Service and serves as a key liaison with the DOI Office of Communications. - Supervises four regional communications team leads, fostering collaboration, consistency, and coordination between headquarters and regional communications operations. Support crisis communications, rapid response efforts, and issues management related to controversial, sensitive, or nationally significant topics. Work collaboratively with FWS communications leadership to strengthen coordination, improve processes, and advance best practices across the Service's communications programs Salary Information $106,437.00 to $138,370.00 Per Year **Pay rates vary depending on location and the salary shown is for the Rest of the U.S. Pay tables found here: https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/pay-leave/salaries-wages/2026/general-schedule/ This vacancy may be used to fill additional positions as vacancies become available.
What you need to qualify
Minimum Qualification Requirements: Specialized Experience To qualify for the GS-13, you must possess at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level in the Federal service, or comparable experience not gained through Federal service. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience is defined as demonstrated experience: 1) Developing media outreach plans and communication strategies; 2) Managing multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced environment; 3) Interacting with internal and external customers in writing and orally; and 4) Handling sensitive, controversial, or high-profile issues. Must meet all.
