What you'd do
This position is a Telecommunications Specialist (Wildland Fire) , GS-0391-13 working for the US Wildland Fire Service and can be filled at any DOI Federal Office location. Location will be negotiable upon selection.
Major duties
As a Telecommunications Specialist (Wildland Fire), your duties will include but are not limited to the following: Leads planning and execution of complex wildland fire radio communications initiatives, developing project strategies, business cases, schedules, risk/issue tracking mechanisms, and resource estimates for approved and proposed LMR and digital communications projects. Develops technical analyses and projections of mission requirements and technology needs; coordinates with engineering and technical stakeholders to ensure architecture, designs, and implementation approaches are technically sound and support operational requirements. Provides expert technical input for USWFS-wide standards, policy implementation, and governance routines for radio communications. Establishes technical priorities and provides technical direction to contractor support resources and project teams (as applicable) performing maintenance, repair, installation, tower/site work, and dispatch equipment configuration activities Conducts short- and long-range planning for modernization, sustainment, and lifecycle replacement of radio systems and infrastructure. Serves as Contracting Officer's Representative (COR) or technical representative as assigned.

In order to qualify for this position, you must possess the Specialized Qualification requirements listed below. Only experience and education obtained by 08/13/2026 will be considered. To qualify for the GS-13 grade level: One year of creditable specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 is required. Examples of work experience include, but are not limited to: providing operational support to field units, offices, programs and centers in Radio/Telecommunications systems; designs radio facilities and systems to meet planning concepts and objectives to field units, offices, programs, and centers; participates in technical reviews to determine the adequacy of existing radio system, establish priorities for repair, recommend improvements and recommend new technologies that will meet business needs. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Demands: Work is primarily sedentary and performed in an office setting. The position includes periodic field work at dispatch facilities, telecommunications sites, and remote radio/repeater installations. Field activities may require extended walking or hiking over rough or uneven terrain; climbing slopes, stairs, or fixed ladders; bending, kneeling, and working in confined or awkward positions; and lifting, carrying, or moving moderately heavy equipment, tools, test sets, and materials associated with telecommunications work. Working Conditions: Work is normally performed in an office environment. Periodic travel to field locations may involve extended driving over unimproved or rough roads and, as conditions require, other modes of transportation (e.g., rotary-wing or fixed-wing aircraft). Field work may occur in adverse weather (e.g., rain, sleet, snow, heat, wind) and at facilities with installed or operating telecommunications equipment. The incumbent may be exposed to hazards such as radio frequency energy, electrical hazards, slips/trips/falls on uneven surfaces, and work in proximity to antenna/tower infrastructure. The incumbent complies with applicable safety requirements and uses required personal protective equipment and precautions (e.g., RF exposure controls, electrical safety, fall protection, and site access procedures).
