Medical Records Technician (Coder)
What you'd do
This position is located within the Portland Area Indian Health Service, Medical Records Department. The primary function of this position is to perform ICD-10 CM, CPT and HCPCS coding for reimbursement and statistical purposes. The incumbent is responsible for the accuracy and timely completion of the medical record.
Major duties
Reviews outpatient and observation records for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with regulatory and coding requirements, including high-acuity and time sensitive encounters. Performs quantitative and qualitative analysis of medical records to verify required components (patient identifiers, signatures, dates, orders, reports, and time-based documentation) and to evaluate documentation for consistency, accuracy, medical necessity, and appropriate modifier usage. Ensures final diagnoses accurately reflect care provided and are supported by provider documentation. Ensures documentation corrections are completed within required timeframes to support timely coding, billing, quality reporting, and performance measurement. What you need to qualify
To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: GS-05: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Reviewing medical records to gather information on reasons for admission and length of stay, supporting the medical coding and health information program, and performing routine, well-defined coding and data entry tasks. Applying knowledge of medical terminology to accurately interpret clinical documentation and assist with coding-related activities. Gathering and organizing coding and documentation data to support compliance, performance improvement, and reporting activities. OR Four (4) years of education above high school (Must provide transcripts) OR A combination of education and experience that when combined fully meet the minimum qualifications for this position. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. GS-06: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Knowledge of medical coding terminology. Experience performing chart analysis and ensuring that medical records are complete, accurate, and properly coded. Experience following well-established medical record procedures and abstracting data from medical records. GS-07: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Ensures medical records are complete, accurate, and properly coded, enabling reliable data for funding, performance measurement, and operational decision-making. Applies knowledge of medical terminology to accurately interpret clinical documentation and coding requirements. Works with healthcare staff to clarify and resolve documentation deficiencies impacting coding accuracy, compliance, reimbursement, and continuity of care. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement.
